Here is the FJ Cruiser Air Cleaner. You can find these for varying prices around the net and some people sell them on fj forums for some reason.
    proxy_2332295343261ddeeae6294da12304dd8efb44cc.png

Basically the it forces dust to the outside and air in the middle. The dust simply falls via gravity into the discharge valve and you have to occasionally pinch a rubber piece to let the captured dust fall out.

Additionally, donaldson makes a variety of air cleaners for just about any application. You can browse their site and see all the options. These guys make filters for industrial equipment that sees an insane amount of dust. They tend to cost more but I think all of them include an additional filter. Probably overkill for most applications unless your truck lives in dust.

So it essentially does the same thing as the top mount prefilter except inline? Could allow for more airflow theoretically as more can enter the system if that's the case.

If you come across anything from Donaldson in terms of model/part #'s would appreciate it.

Enough to make it a lot of fun!
I will have to look into one of these prefilters. I want to keep my engine as safe as possible.

I'm not worried about a prefilter...there are a lot of people showing a normal factory intake filter and then one with a snorkel attached and the snorkel setup came out cleaner

A lot of guys run 35s without any changes to their air box and never have troubles. But I just got done paying $3500 for an engine rebuild because dust entered my engine. I'd rather be protected.

With the stock filter intact? I've never seen an engine fail from actual air dust contamination without more to the story than a dirty filter.

I think because he added 35's that he cut his fenders, flares, and removed the splash gaurd to fit the 35's this exposes the intake and allows dust and water to be sucked right in. Most that do this re route the intake to avoid this , by means of a snorkel or cold air Intake. But I'm just guessing

Yeah that makes sense. It's the water that's the real problem. Once the filters wet it begins to fail and let dust by. Then good bye engine.

Yeah, I ran a afe drop in for a short period but otherwise stock filter. And yep the fender liner was cut, but then replaced after finding out I was sucking in dirt. That stopped the mud chunks not dust. There was a lot of weird things about the engine when we tore it down but there was a ton of dirt in the intake. Regardless, I had a bunch of people saying that its not a big deal because they have been sucking mud with no problems.

Not arguing that it is probably not needed but if I can minimize the dust at all, I will.

Did you remove the secondary filter in the air filter box.the one before the ma's air flow sensor. I know I have seen some people do this and always thought that was a bad idea.

Yeah. Just keep in mind every joint and exposed port, like on an in line precleaner, is another point for water and dirt to get sucked in. If it's before the MAF you'll never know until it's too late so seal those joints as best as possible :).
