So I'm 20 years old and I am really considering joining the airforce. My dream has always been
to help people. My dad has been a sheriff for going on 23 years now. So I've grown up around emergency responding. I've tried and tried for law enforcement and it seems like there's not much room for opportunity in that field. What I'm really trying to get out of this thread is what do you guys think? Are any of you currently enlisted and how do you like it? Thoughts?
I want to make sure that this is what I want to do for sure and that my heads on straight before I sign the contract.
    Thanks guys

Do it. If you don't love it, finish your contract and move on.

Best choice I ever made was joining the Navy.

Did 7 years in the Navy, do not regret getting out, certainly do not regret joining in the first place, hell of an experience and sure to give you many lifelong memories.

You may have a terrible experience and get out after 4 years, or a great one and stay in, either way you will gain very significant and valuable perspective about work/life/future.

    Your experience may vary.

I enlisted in the Air Force 30 years ago. I did my 4 years and got out, but it was the best thing I did for myself. I would do it all over again.

I've been in 10 years now and it's a good living. But it's getting harder and harder to want to do another 10.

    Do it.

Two best decisions of my life, joining the Air Force almost 31 years ago, marrying my wife almost 30 yrs ago. I have no idea where I'd be today without her and the Air Force, but I'm certain I'm better off than I would have been without them.

And I'm not saying make a career, but it'll get you started down the road. If law enforcement is what you want to do, then hold out to get that field in your contract. That might require some patience waiting for it to become available. If nothing else, doing one hitch will give you some experience and help you mature. Don't take that the wrong way.

It is becoming a bit of a political beast lately. Glad I'm dealing with it from a civil service perspective nowadays.

Best thing I've ever done for myself was joining the Air Force. I've been in 9 years and I plan on going until retirement. It's taught me discipline and responsibility as well as taken me to places I'd never thought I'd go, like Mississippi, Nebraska, Afghanistan, South Korea and my next stop is Alaska.

If there is a specific career field that you would like to enlist in make sure that your recruiter doesn't sign you in as an "open" in any category. Get a guarantee for that job.

Thanks guys. It helps a lot that within the first sentence of nearly every post it's "do it"

Do yourself a huge favor and take a few classes at the community college before enlisting. Anything at all. You get stripes for those right out of basic training. At least you used to.

Also, exercise a little extra before basic. It will make it a little easier. Running, situps, pushups, jumping jacks, etc.

If you haven't already taken the ASVAB test, you might want to get a study guide or something too.

Security Police are needed EVERYWHERE, so you have a good choice for travel.

    That's about all I have.

Do it. I was in the Army, back home and it was the best decision I ever made and set me up for where I am today.....
I have friends that were in the USAF and they all really enjoyed the opportunities and doors that have opened because of it.

This is also my Opinion, if I hadn't found a job in my field (Auto) in a month or two I would've been looking at my service options.

Well its a land Cruiser with a diesel so I've got that going for me.
Why not Navy Master at Arms vice Air Force MP? The advancment is much better if you decide to stay. Lots of interesting places to go. Just a thought.

I am totally biased but the advancement in the air force is slowing way down as is the Army. Just a thought.

Go intel, serve out your contract obligation. Get out. Get a civilian intel job. Get paid triple of what you were making as an e-6.

Do it. I served in the Navy back in the dark ages (early '60s). Second smartest thing I ever did. Things might have changed, but then advancement was easier in the Navy than in the Air Force. However, Air Force duty stations are probably more pleasant than Navy, especially sea duty.

I would suggest that you don't re-enlist early if it is offered. Wait until you know what you want to do with your life. I enjoyed the first year or two, but decided that civilian life offered more for me.
