He is considering buying the equipment to start welding aluminum. If I tell him another person is interested in aluminum he will probably buy, that's also what I'm interested in. He can weld it, just doesn't currently have his own equipment for that.

Well I'm all about giving a local guy my money and business so we will have to see. It's going to have to wait until the beginning of 2017 though.

Haha he won't mind that a bit. That's probably when I'll be looking at skids too. He hasn't made a set at this point, but our trucks are basically identical...he'll have fun doing it. I know I'm gonna have him do mine, so he will have measurements for yours then too.

But also weaker. I'm ok sacrificing weight for strength on the bumpers.

True but I'm not going to be bouncing it off rocks, and using it to carry the weight of the truck either. I would rather not put my self in the position to ever use them in this truck. I will eventually get another older 2nd gen for that kind of activities.

Good point. My truck will be my full time toy, I plan to purchase a nicer daily driver later. Are you wanting steel sliders though?

I've never seen aluminum sliders. I don't think they are possible assuming you don't want them to bend into your cab.

Figured so. Just making sure. Texted him and he said he's about to start pricing and deciding what to get to do aluminum. He's had likee 7-8 people mention aluminum to him, but it just hasn't been enough to convince him. I told him for both of us any aluminum would be after the start of 2017 though (bumper/skids for you, skids for me.)

My feeling sliders and skids need to be steel. I have some damn nice gouges in my skids, would hate to see what they looked like if aluminum. Bumper could be aluminum, it is less likely to take a pinpoint hit like the rest. If you are hitting trees with it, you already screwed up pretty big or you need to read the tread lightly information again.

I am doing steel bumpers simply for the safety of potential wrecks ON-ROAD. Too many idiots out there nowadays. Is aluminum really that much weaker than steel at the thickness for skid plates? Both are thin at that point, but you can do thicker aluminum and save so much weight still. Skid plates provide a smooth surface to "slowly" slide across, and bumpers/sliders provide more of impact points..

Not in my truck. Most all of my impacts happen when a wheel(s) drops in a hole. But there is a huge difference between when there is just dirt or mud underneath you and when there is a pointed boulder underneath you. Then you get the joy of grinding it the remaining length of your skids. You do have a point about thicker material with aluminum, but that also puts you closer to the ground.
