Yup and the point I was trying to make was a CB would be the easier platform to get everyone on and would work just fine. @dcoursler is voting for getting everyone on the FRS channels, which would work just fine too but the water gets muddy there with legal issues (I know you don't care dc ) and you'd have to buy a more expensive radio.

I just don't think getting the group on UHF is worth it.

Y'all are serious about your laws and stuff. Geez y'all relax a little bit. It's just a man trying to talk across the air waves. Anyway so now that I was attacked for wanting to do better coms.
so seriously to get back to what I said a couple posts ago. Since you appear to be a commo guy will you seriously post up some links with all necessary equipment needed to purchase a quality budget CB build that will function flawlessly. Thanks.

I'm sticking with CB as it is the most common setup. Out of everyone down here in Florida, maybe 1 or 2 people are running HAM setups along side their CBs.

    O906's Simple CB shopping list

This is no where near a complete list of options but some simple choices to help those that have never installed a CB radio before.

Not listed here are the small items like wire, butt connectors, heat shrink, fuses, etc needed to install the radio.

    **RADIO CHOICES**

Radio choice is important but really most CB radios will all preform the same aside from #4.
    1. Cobra 19DXIV 40 Channel Mobile Compact CB Radio - Advantage: cheap and proven design - Disadvantage: lacking features larger size
    2. Uniden 40-Channel CB Radio (PRO505XL) - Advantage: cheap - Disadvantage: lacking features larger size
    3. Cobra 75WXST 40-Channel CB Radio - Advantage: Small size can be installed almost anywhere - Disadvantage: Cost
    4. AnyTone Smart CB Radio - Advantage: More power than legal limit, very small compact size - Disadvantage: Requires advanced setup and is illegal to modify and use (if you care)
    **ANTENNA, MOUNT, & CABLE CHOICES**

This is really where your setup will shine. Antenna's and how they are mounted are far more important than the radio from a performance stand point. I'm going to pair the antenna with a mount so you guys know what to get.

    1. FireStik 5 feet II - You can get this in a number of lengths but 4ft or 5ft models are the best.
Relentless Fab Antenna mount - Easy hood hinge mount
BAMF 2nd Gen Tailgate CB antenna mount - Tailgate CB mount
Relentless Fab Bed Rail mount - Simple mount. Will need to be grounded to frame, not the most ideal mount but will do.
FireStik K-8R18 18 foot - This is a proprietary cable Firestik makes. It's almost idiot proof and the best for a first time installer.
Firestik K4R HEAVY-DUTY STUD MOUNT - This 3/8 stud will mount your antenna to the mount of your choice.
Firestik SS-3H Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Antenna Spring - Saves your antenna and actually aids in tuning.

    2. K40 K-30 35" 300 Watts Stainless Steel Magnet Mount CB Antenna - Easiest antenna install. Just a whip and a magnet mount. Not recommended.

    3. HUSTLER IC56 102" STAINLESS STEEL CB RADIO WHIP ANTENNA - Best antenna listed here a full 1/2 wave length but you have to deal with a 102" steel whip.
Firestik K4R HEAVY-DUTY STUD MOUNT - This 3/8 stud will mount your antenna to the mount of your choice.
Firestik SS-3H Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Antenna Spring - Saves your antenna and actually aids in tuning.
BAMF 2nd Gen Tailgate CB antenna mount - Tailgate CB mount really the only choice for the 102" whip.

    **TUNER**

You can't install a radio without tuning it and I won't cover that here but at the meet up I will go over the principles behind tuning an antenna.

SWR METER for CB Radio Antennas with 3' Jumper cable - Workman SWR2T & CX-3-PL-PL

I hope that helps some of the attendees get started with a CB install.

So I've been thinking more about this trip and I think for me it's going to end up being a 2 week trip. I want to spend some time in Colorado exploring and swing by the Grand Canyon.
