Speaking of engines.

When I was in N.C. last week a guy pulled up next to me in a pre 86 Toyota pickup with a sweet tube flat bed setup. I asked the guy what year it was, and he said it was an 85. I said nice, that’s basically the holy grail of Toyota rock crawling. He said, yea man it’s pretty sweet, it’s powered by a V6 Chevy vortec and has tons more power than that terrible 4 cylinder. I asked why he would remove one of the best engines Toyota ever made for a shitty Chevy V6 and he looked very confused.

I have never been so disappointed in a person......

maybe with the 4bt but doubtful, some people say things that aren't entirely accurate, but i can't argue since I don't have one.

it definitely isn't with a 6bt, we have one in our f250, and the thousands and thousands it cost to put it in there wasn't worth it, plus it's always a never ending project with a new vehicle. if you used old vehicle with old hardware sure.

 

because the 22re is known as a boat anchor. reliable, but no thrills.

also GM stuff can be swapped easily and tons of aftermarket support.

 

Taking a 22re out of an 85 pickup is like doing an IFS swap on an 80 series land cruiser. Sure it can be done, but why!

A lot of people swap the 22re when building. If this guys was in nice enough status to DD then yeah i don't get it, but for offroad it's not uncommon at all.

I stand by overgeared and underpowered. The best built 1gen 4runners and Toyota PUs I’ve seen follow this philosophy. With duel cases and a crawl box having a reliable motor is all you need and the 22re is just that.

A 4.3 Chevy V-6 is an awesome engine. Good power, fuel economy, reliable, parts availability, etc. It is basically a 350 Chevy missing 2 cylinders. Its the 60° Chevy V-6s that you want to stay away from i.e. 2.8, 3.8, 3.4

most common swaps are still toyota engines because most can be engines can mate to the transmission by just changing bellhousings

Ive personaly blown up 3 4.3's. And ive worked on a mininum of 100 more. They are aweful engines.

Another member and I are looking into doing a 2 day trip up to the Talladega forest next month just before Christmas. I'll be in my 4x4 he'll be in a Prerunner on 35's.

Any major concerns we should have? I believe the route includes 6000-1 & 600-2. Hope to do some good offroading and camp overnight halfway through.

Also what's the camping like? Are there plenty of primitive places off of the trails to camp or do you have you find designated campgrounds?
