    Do it! Be a lot of cutting with a grinder if that's what you're using but itll be worth it.

    Look at the 3/16" x 3" flat stock. Order the right width and you only have to drill and round the ends.

    you might could look at a local fab shop and see if they have any leftover from a project... they sometimes let remnants go for scrap prices

    fwiw i was pretty good acquaintances with a shop when i was finishing up my bumper and not only were they going to give me a scrap piece for my skid/rad cover, they took measurements and broke it to shape for me so i didnt even have to cut anything

    If you mean 12” x 48” that is going to be hard to find for scrap price. Sometimes eBay has good deals on pieces like that if you just need one.

    If you mean 1” x 4” I got a piece you can have.
