I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
I have twice in my vehicle than it's worth? Since when have tinker vehicles been an investment?

I really don't blame him, engine swaps are serious business. I evaluated a ford 5.0 / 302 swap for the miata because it's one of the cheapest, easiest engine swaps there is, been done a thousand times. And the parts are still 3 grand +, and a kit to do it is 3500+, or a ton of fab work if you want to totally go your own way.

Either way, it's one of those things everyone loves to talk about, but actually nutting up and doing it is a pretty big project.

Hah, well, I'd give people more credit for ragging on him if they give me more deets on the last engine swap they did, not just info about swapping out coilovers. :spy:

its been a little while but i put a 305 in an i believe it was an 85(?) celica, may have been an 86 or 84 but somewhere around there. then shortly after that helped to drop a 350 in a 240.... but that was prob close to 8 or 10 years ago..... other than that it was building little 22r's and other variations or that motor as well as build 3T's and 3T strokers.... but those are just all 4 cyl's so they prob dont count.

Lat year when the engine in my Tacoma was being replaced I seriously considered putting in the LS1 that I have here at the shop. The deal breaker was the 3 grand in conversion kit parts.

Unrelated note that nobody but me cares about, but I'm still happy: As of last friday, blown engine is on a hoist, flywheel is getting resurfaced as we speak. Never pulled an engine before.

Not sure yet, I've got a replacement with 151k on it in good shape for cheap, I'm going to drop it in and hopefully get the car running, then sort out what to do about the rod bearings on the old one.

Too bad you aren't local. I'd say bring it down here and I would teach you how to rebuild one.

Hah, yeah, thanks. I'll figure something out, it's really going to come down to what I can get for it for parts vs what parts to fix it will cost. A reconditioned crank and new bearings alone will be pushing 200 probably, and that's assuming the block is OK, so I don't know yet. I will at least put it on the stand and tear it down myself to verify the issue and maybe learn a thing or two.

Most machine shops will machine your crank for $80. Bearings I would think around 60? So you should be able to save a good bit by taking your crank down for machining rather than replace it with one already machined. Just a suggestion.

not only that but you have a huge selection of speed shops and machine shops in and around the knoxville area jim. if you cant find somewhere to take it to get the work done then you dont need to be turning wrenches on it anymore. :D

I was planning to talk to Southeastern Truck Body and Equipment http://www.setruck.com/index.php in south Huntsville. I believe they do the utility company trucks here in Huntsville. If you talk with them let me know.

Lol, you both have good points. I really want to talk to the parts guy/engine builder/racing guy in Danville about it, he knows a lot about these engines, I bet he would have some suggestions.

A rebuild is absolutely not out of the question, and Bill, you might be right, it might be cheap enough to be worth a fix. I just want to get a running car again, and I'll go from there.

That's why you got a jeep!

Your truck needed a lot of work but the majority is what you wanted to do to it. Which is the purpose of a built rig. Jim was just stating that he didn't want to put that much money into the car since he drives it a lot

I guess I forgot about him saying it blew. I thought he was wanting to rebuild/put another in for fun
