Awesome on both accounts! You may dread a workout, but you'll never regret a workout.

I have a Delica in Cruwear in my pocket today. Thin blade cuts like a demon! PM2s are nice, but my personal favorites are the Manix and Military line in a good tool steel.

Tool steels are tough and very abrasion resistant, which translates into great edge holding over time. They have a high carbon content, so they will stain and patina over time, especially cutting acidic fruits and vegetables. But they are tough, which means the edge will roll, as opposed to chip. Chipping requires you to remove more metal at the edge to meet the apex. Rolling, you can straighten out with a common sharpening steel.

S35vn is an excellent stainless, I have it in a PM2. Chris Reeve further expounded on s30v to create s35vn, but I have found them to be very similar in cutting. The difference is in the sharpening, much easier to sharpen s35vn than s30v. Stainless typically are harder and take longer to bring back to sharp. Carbon steels are easier to sharpen, but dull faster.

I have all the DMT grits from 220 grit to 2200 grit for finishing. Get him DMT, they are the best diamonds you can buy. Mono chrystalline vs polychristaline. Buy once, cry once.

When it comes to cutting edges, heat treat and edge geometry trumps all other characteristics.

Nothing wrong with the Sharpmaker, it's probably one of Spyderco's most sold kits. Whether freehand or Sharpmaker or crock sticks, it's all about holding a consistent angle on the push and the pull strokes. Well, pull strokes for the Sharpmaker and crock sticks.

Stropping will bring out that last little bit of sharpness in your edge as well.

Also, pick up the diamond stones for your Sharpmaker as well, cuts twice as fast as their normal brown and white stones.

Went to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra show last night and it was amazing. It’s definitely worth the money.
