HAPPY THANKSGIVING! A cold front is pushing through South Alabama this morning with a band of showers; drier air continues to filter into the northern counties of the state. For North/Central Alabama, today will be partly to mostly sunny with a high between 65 and 70 degrees. Showers will remain possible over the southern quarter of the state south of the front, but amounts there will be fairly light and spotty.

TOMORROW: Clouds will increase tomorrow as a wave of low pressure develops on the front to the west. Rain is likely for a pretty good part of Alabama late in the day and tomorrow night; the heaviest and most widespread rain will be over the southern 2/3 of the state. We don’t expect any severe weather issues.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: After the wave tomorrow night passes to the east, the front gets a nudge southward again, and Saturday looks dry for most of the state with a pretty decent amount of sun. The high will be in the 60s over North Alabama, with low 70s to the south. Clouds move back in Sunday as yet another wave forms on the front, and a soaking rain event is likely by Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. Based on the forecast track of the surface low, a few strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible Sunday night over South Alabama. Rain amounts statewide will be in the 1-2 inch range.

NEXT WEEK: Rain will end early Monday morning, and the coldest air so far this season will blast into the state during the day with an icy north wind. Look for falling temperatures Monday; North Alabama will fall into the 30s by afternoon. A cold core upper low over the region could bring some drizzle Monday, and maybe even a few snow flurries for the northern counties into Monday night. If we do see a few snow flakes, no impact or accumulation is expected… the big story is the cold air.

Temperatures will drop well below freezing Tuesday and Wednesday morning, with lows generally in the low to mid 20s. A weak disturbance will bring some clouds Wednesday, and maybe a little light rain, but moisture will be very limited and rain amounts, if any, will be light. Thursday and Friday are looking dry with temperatures remaining below average. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.



IRON BOWL: Saturday looks like a great day for the biggest football game of the year in Alabama (Auburn at Alabama; 2:30p CT kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium). The sky will be partly to mostly sunny; temperatures will fall from 65 degrees at kickoff, to near 60 by the final whistle. No risk of rain.

HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFFS: Rain is possible tomorrow night for the high school playoff games across the state; the most widespread and heaviest rain will be over the southern counties of the state. Temperatures will be in the 60s.

TROPICS: A frontal low pressure system is located several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda. The low is forecast to interact with an upper-level trough today and could acquire some subtropical characteristics during the next day or two while it drifts south-southwestward. Environmental conditions are expected to become unfavorable for further development by the weekend. The Gulf of Mexico remains quiet, and the hurricane season ends Monday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: Lightning and heavy rain delay the start of the Monday Night Football game at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field between the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers by 25 minutes. The muddy field conditions contribute to one of the lowest scoring NFL games won by the Steelers, 3-0. The teams combined 375 yards, and the winning field goal occurred with 17 seconds left in the game.
