    Howdy fellas!

When I picked up my Black metallic truck in November, I noticed that someone along the way had attempted to remove the shipping plastic from the hood and doors in a, uhm, unconventional way. Light scratches and swirl marks everywhere. Salesguy said clean up would take care of it- didn't happen, but they did manage to park it in a low light area where it looked fine. Long story short:

I, nor my buddies in the biz could find or recommend anyone around here (guy in Trussville has a 3 month backlog) to correct the paint. So...I'm a car guy. I can't help it. I fix things, make them faster (some may remember my Black 88 BBC Mustang @ Lassiter mountain, formerly owned by a Vietnamese guy named Dominic). Cleaner, shinier, longer lasting.

I decided I'd use my skills for paint correction for locals if they need it. I'm in Gadsden, I'll work Saturdays. PM me.

I use a titanium DC flux core welder that works nice. Perfect for my needs- portable, good penetration, quick. I’ve used it to repair my bush hog, box blade, built a trailer from scratch, random truck welding.

Thought about going to a mig setup next, but I think flux core is good for anything I would mig really. I’m leaning more towards tig so I can do a lot more with a more simple set up than mig. Is anyone in this thread an experienced welder?

@BamaTaco56 probably the most knowledgeable or @JBTacoma.

I think I’ve got the same set up as you but I think I’m gonna try to get a nice mix it up once I get comfortable with my flux core welder and get good at it then once I can start welding stuff pretty decently I’m gonna try to start making sliders and such

I use Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP, it does MIG, Flux-Cored, DC Stick or DC TIG

Mig is far superior to flux core in every situation except outdoor welding in the wind and portability. If you want to upgrade a machine that’s used in a garage, go with MIG first.

TIG is much harder to learn and is not as well suited for the projects you mentioned

Good point, but I was thinking TIG for other projects I can’t currently do with flux- thinner metal, different metals, aesthetically appealing work. Flux has been fine for what I would see myself using MIG on so far. If I were doing much more of it or thicker or needed more attractive welds I could see getting a MIG. Don’t think I’d want to TIG an entire utility trailer of course haha. I hesitate to get a combo machine since it seems like either MIG or TIG suffers slightly. What are your thoughts on those? Best to buy two dedicated machines?

I would get 2 dedicated machines, but I over spend on tools. I do plan to get a dedicated TIG unit in the future to hopefully build roll cages.

As far as something you would more often on day to day stuff, your money will be better spent on a MIG unit. But that’s just my opinion. MIG welding is just so much than flux, easy to see and manipulate. I will never weld flux again unless I absolutely have to. It can do some pretty thin stuff with .023 wire and can “look” as good as the person holding the squirt gun is capable (though obviously not as good as TIG).
