DECEMBER WARMTH: Most of Alabama will remain dry through tomorrow, although a few isolated showers could show up over the southwest counties of the state tomorrow afternoon as moisture levels rise. With a partly sunny sky, we project high in the low 70s today, and then in the 72-75 degree range tomorrow.

Here are the daily record highs for the rest of the week at Birmingham…

    Today (December 16) 76 (1924)
    Tomorrow (December 17) 73 (1984)

That record high of 73 tomorrow could very well be in danger with temperatures here 15-20 degrees above average for mid-December.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A cold front will bring showers back to the state Saturday. This won’t be an “all day” rain, but if you have something planned outdoors just be aware that occasional showers are likely. There will be some surface based instability available, so a rumble of thunder is possible, but severe storms are not expected with weak dynamics. The day will be cloudy with a high in the 67-71 degree range.

Rain ends Saturday evening, and the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny Sunday. The day will be considerably cooler with a high only in the 50-55 degree range, almost a 20 degree drop from Saturday’s warmth.

NEXT WEEK: Monday will be a partly to mostly sunny day with a high between 56 and 60 degrees. Then, clouds return Tuesday, and some rain is possible mainly over the southern half of the state as a wave passes through the northern Gulf of Mexico. We note the reliable European global model suggests the rain will be confined to the area near the Gulf Coast.

Wednesday through Friday will be dry with mostly sunny days and fair nights; highs will be close to 60 degrees.

CHRISTMAS DAY: For now the weather looks dry and pleasant on Saturday December 25. Mostly sunny with a high at or just over 60 degrees after a morning low in the low 40s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: An EF4 tornado tore through the southern part of Tuscaloosa, killing eleven people and injuring over 100. Nine of the fatalities occurred in mobile homes, one in a vehicle, and one in a commercial building converted to residential use. Six of those killed were females and five were males. Ages ranged from 16 months to 83 years old. The tornado was on the ground for a total of 18 miles, all within Tuscaloosa county. The tornado path was estimated to be 750 yards wide at it’s maximum intensity.

There was an excellent warning for the tornado; a warning was issued at 12:40 p.m. on that deadly Saturday, 14 minutes before the twister first touched down in a rural area southwest of Tuscaloosa near the Black Warrior River. The tornado crossed Alabama 69 near Shelton State Community College and Hillcrest High School; destroying a shopping center and many homes. The Bear Creek Trailer Park was hit, where many of the deaths occurred. The tornado moved to the east/northeast, south of Skyland Boulevard, and finally crossed I-59/20 near the Cottondale exit.

Later in the day, the same parent storm dropped an F3 tornado which stuck the Coats Bend region of Etowah County, near Gadsden, detroying 250 homes and injuring 14 people. Like the Tuscaloosa tornado, excellent warnings were issued by the National Weather Service long before the damage occurred.

NEAR RECORD WARMTH LATER TODAY: We expect a high in the 70-75 degree range across most of Alabama today. Birmingham’s record high is 73 set in 1984… it could be in danger if the sun breaks out for a while this afternoon. Most of the day should be dry, although showers remain possible over far North Alabama near the Tennessee state line, and over the southwest counties of the state. Showers are possible statewide after midnight tonight as a cold front approaches.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: That front will bring showers to the state tomorrow, otherwise the sky will be cloudy with a high around 70 degrees. It won’t rain all day… expect off an on showers and possibly a rumble of thunder. Thankfully dynamic forcing is minimal, and severe storms are not expected in Alabama. Rain will end late tomorrow night, and the sky becomes partly sunny during the day Sunday. The weather will be noticeably cooler Sunday with a high in the mid 50s.

NEXT WEEK: Clouds will increase Monday, otherwise the day will be dry with a high between 57 and 60 degrees. Some rain is likely over most of the state Monday night into Tuesday morning as a wave of low pressure moves through the northern Gulf of Mexico. Rain amounts will be heavier over the southern counties, and no severe storms are expected (and probably no thunder since we will be in a cool, stable airmass). Rain will end from west to east Tuesday afternoon… temperatures will hold in the 50s all day Tuesday.

Then, the rest of the week will be dry with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights Wednesday through Friday. Highs will be close to 60 degrees.

CHRISTMAS DAY: The weather still looks dry and pleasant… a good supply of sunshine with a high in the low to mid 60s after beginning the day in the 35-42 degree range. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB will take on BYU in the Independence Bowl tomorrow in Shreveport, Louisiana (2:30p CT kickoff on ABC 33/40)… the sky will be cloudy, and periods of rain are likely during the game. Temperatures will be falling through the 50s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1924: From the Monthly Weather Review, “a severe glaze storm occurred in west-central Illinois on December 17 and 18, the area of great destruction embracing a territory about 75 miles in width and 170 miles in length. In the affected area, trees were badly damaged, wires broken, and thousands of electric poles went down. Electric services were paralyzed, and it required weeks to restore operation and months to permanently rebuild the lines.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Very cold air invaded Alabama; temperatures struggled to climb out of 30s with a biting north wind. Snow showers and flurries fell in the cold air, while tornado recovery was underway in places like Tuscaloosa, where an F4 tornado killed eleven people the day before, on December 16.

I’ve been off road a little, just been off the deer hunting road.

Besides, my off roading buddy sold his Taco and built a roller skate.

    And I still need gears.

Saw the craziest over landing rig I seen in awhile today. The blue Tacoma has an Alucab camper with a fireplace inside. Alucab Batwing awning and is supercharged. The upgrades cost more than the truck. anyone know him? Tennessee plates. Mines the truck blue one on left

Ditched the tire carrier again and came up with a way to keep the tire in the bed and still have some bed space.

COOL WITH SOME RAIN AHEAD: Temperatures are at or below freezing across parts of North/Central Alabama early this morning… here are some reports just before sunrise…

    Cullman 28
    Gadsden 29
    Haleyville 29
    Huntsville 31
    Decatur 31
    Hueytown 31
    Talladega 31
    Pell City 32
    Muscle Shoals 32
    Albertville 32
    Birmingham 33
    Northport 33
    Anniston 34
    Tuscaloosa 34
    Montgomery 41
    Mobile 41
    Dothan 45

Clouds will increase across Alabama today as a surface low develops in the Gulf of Mexico. Rain is likely tonight and tomorrow mainly for the southern 2/3 of the state; heaviest rain will be south and east of Montgomery. Otherwise, the weather will be cloudy and cool with a high in the mid 50s today, and low 50s tomorrow. Parts of North Alabama won’t get out of the 40s tomorrow afternoon.

WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Wednesday will be a partly to mostly sunny day with a high in the mid 60s. Then, expect sunny weather Thursday and Friday with warmer afternoon… the high Thursday will be close to 60, followed by mid to upper 60s Friday.

CHRISTMAS DAY: Christmas Day will be mild with a high between 65 and 70 degrees.. we expect a mix of sun and clouds with some potential for few brief, isolated showers as moisture levels will increase a bit.

Here are the years (ten of them since 1900) when temperatures have reached 70 degrees on December 25 at Birmingham…

    2016 78
    2015 77
    1987 74
    1982 73
    1942 73
    1964 72
    1926 71
    1922 71
    2019 70
    1901 70

Safe to say we won’t have a snow threat this year on Christmas Day, unlike 2010 when parts of the state had over 5 inches of snow on the ground December 25. Temperatures this year on Christmas will be below average over the western third of the nation, and the weather looks brutally cold over the western half of Canada.

SUNDAY AND NEXT WEEK: At this point the weather looks mild and mostly dry Sunday and through most of next week as an upper ridge persists across the Deep South… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1836: A famous “sudden freeze” occurred in central Illinois. A cold front with 70 mph winds swept through around Noon, dropping the temperature from 40 degrees to near zero in a matter of minutes. Many settlers froze to death. Folklore told of chickens frozen in their tracks and men frozen to saddles. Ice in streams reportedly froze to six inches in a few hours.

ON THIS DATE IN 2012: A pre-dawn EF-1 tornado moved through the western part of Mobile. The tornado formed around 449am CST near Davidson High School, and lifted near Telegraph Road in Prichard. The tornado path was approximately 7 miles in length and 50 to 75 yards in width
