    Morning!

    From AlabamaWX

WARMER: Clouds linger across Alabama this morning with a few isolated showers, but the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny later this morning, and temperatures should rise into the upper 60s this afternoon as a temporary warming trend begins. We reach the mid 70s tomorrow with a mix of sun and clouds, but the warmth won’t last long. A cold front moves into the state tomorrow night with rain and thunderstorms… SPC maintains a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms for areas south of a line from Mobile to Eufaula, and a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) as far north as Grove Hill, Prattville, and Roanoke.

Strong winds are possible with the heavier thunderstorms across South Alabama tomorrow night, along with a few tornadoes. Severe storms are not expected over the northern half of the state.

MARCH SNOW: As cold air rushes in, rain will change to snow over North Alabama after midnight tomorrow night into early Saturday morning. Higher accumulation probabilities are along and north of U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden), where some spots could see 1-2 inches on grassy areas (roads will be just wet). Snow flakes are likely down to Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Anniston, but odds of meaningful accumulation are low that far south. Accumulation potential will be limited by warm soil temperatures; remember we will be in the 70s tomorrow afternoon before the snow arrives.

As temperatures drop below freezing, a few slick spots are possible on bridges across the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama Saturday morning. For now travel impact is not expected for places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston.

The sky will clear Saturday afternoon, but the day will be breezy and very cold with temperatures holding in the 30s along and north of I-20. The wind chill index will hover around freezing all day.

With a clear sky and diminishing wind, we project lows in the 18-24 degree range over the northern half of Alabama early Sunday morning, a very significant late season freeze. Some North Alabama communities will be below freezing for 8-12 hours Saturday night/early Sunday. Freezing temperatures are likely all the way down to the Gulf Coast. Then, with a sunny sky temperatures warm into the 50s Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: Monday will be dry and warmer with a high in the 60s, but rain returns to the state Tuesday, and possibly into part of the day Wednesday, and an upper trough passes through the region. Temperatures rise into the 70s Thursday and Friday; showers and storms are possible by Friday night (March 18)… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1986: Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes hit Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. A total of 19 tornadoes occurred. Three of the tornadoes in Indiana reached F3 intensity. A densely populated subdivision of Southeast Lexington, Kentucky, was heavily damaged by a tornado. Twenty people were injured, and 900 homes were destroyed or demolished. A very strong thunderstorm downburst hit the Cincinnati area. At the Greater Cincinnati Airport, windows were blown out of the control tower, injuring the six controllers on duty.

206,400 miles on the rc truck and changed the spark plugs and cleaned the throttle body and maf sensor. Think those could’ve been original plugs the metal end was even worn thin.

    Morning!

    From AlabamaWX

WILD WEATHER PATTERN: The weather across Alabama will be about as active as it gets over the next 24 hours; we will have a significant snow event for the northern counties after midnight tonight, while strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across the southern half of the state.

Most of the day today will be dry with a high in the 70s; a few scattered showers could show up this afternoon. The main action comes tonight.

SEVERE STORM POTENTIAL: SPC maintains a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms for areas south of a line from Millry to Prattville to Roanoke tonight, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) as far north as Demopolis, Brent, Helena, and Jacksonville.

The main window for strong to severe storms tonight will come from 7:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. The main threat will come from strong straight line winds, but a few tornadoes are possible as well… the higher tornado potential will be in the “slight risk” area across South and Southeast Alabama. Be sure you have a way of hearing severe weather warnings tonight if they are needed!

SNOW: A winter storm warning has been issued for Marion, Winston, Franklin, Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Morgan, Madison, and Jackson counties tonight, and a winter weather advisory is in effect as far south as Livingston, Brent, Sylacauga, and Heflin.

Snow amounts of 2-4 inches are now forecast in the winter storm warning area, with totals generally in the 1/2 to 1 inch range across the winter weather advisory area.

The rain will change to snow over North Alabama late tonight; most of the snow will fall from midnight to 6:00 a.m. Roads and bridges will likely become icy and dangerous across the winter storm warning area; slick spots will form on bridges across the winter weather advisory area (including Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Anniston/Gadsden).

The sky will be sunny most of the day tomorrow, but temperatures will hold in the 30s over the northern counties of the state, and the wind chill index will hover around freezing all day thanks to an icy north wind.

Temperatures early Sunday morning will drop into the 16-24 degree range for the northern half of Alabama… many places will be below freezing for 8-12 hours. A freeze likely all the way down to the Gulf Coast… this will be a very significant late season freeze. Then, during the day Sunday, the sky will be sunny with a high in the 50s as a warming trend begins.

NEXT WEEK: Monday will be dry with a high in the 60s; showers return to the state Tuesday into part of the day Wednesday as an upper trough moves through. Thursday will be dry and mild with a high in the 70s, followed by showers and possibly a few strong storms Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

NWS Huntsville has upgraded Cullman, DeKalb, and Marshall counties in North Alabama to a Winter Storm Warning from 9 pm tonight until 9 am Saturday morning. These counties have been added to Colbert, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, and Morgan counties already in the warning.

    Snowfall Totals:
    – Widespread totals of 2 to 4 inches across northern Alabama (potentially up to 5 inches in southern Middle Tennessee).
    – Potential still exists for locally higher amounts beneath persistent snow bands.

    Timing and Duration:
    – Rain transitions to snow northwest to southeast from 9 pm to 2 am.
    – Accumulating snow will taper off to flurries Saturday morning before ending.

    Potential Impacts:
    – Very hazardous travel conditions will develop late this evening into Saturday morning.
    – Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are likely for most areas, with locally higher amounts up to 5 inches across southern Middle Tennessee and beneath any persistent snow bands.
    – North northwest winds of 20 to 25 MPH, with gusts of 35 to 45 MPH.
    – Bitterly cold wind chills in the single digits to teens both tonight and Saturday night. Saturday afternoon high temperatures will only reach 28 to 32 degrees.
    – Combination of winds and snowfall may lead to tree and power line damage.
