    From AlabamaWX

HELLO APRIL: We are forecasting a very nice spring day for Alabama on this first day of April; a mostly sunny sky with highs generally in the 70s. South Alabama could reach the low 08s this afternoon.

SUMMER PREVIEW: A strong upper ridge will build cross the Gulf Coast region, setting the stage for the warmest weather so far this year over the latter half of the week. Highs rise into the 85-90 degree range, right at record levels for early April in Alabama. The ridge will also help to keep showers and thunderstorms north and west of Alabama, but a few isolated showers or storms could creep into the northwest counties tomorrow night.

Here are the daily record highs for Birmingham…

    April 3 87 (1999)
    April 4 88 (1934)
    April 5 88 (2010)

If we do reach 90 degrees on one of these days, it won’t be the earlier 90 degree temperature on record; that happened on March 21, 1907.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be another summer-like day, with a partly sunny sky along with a high in the upper 80s. Then, the ridge breaks down, allowing showers and storms to move into the state Saturday night and Sunday. We note SPC has defined a risk of severe storms late Saturday night over the northern and western counties.

We will be much more specific about any threat of strong to severe storms later in the week; the risk will likely come late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Highs drop into the 70s Sunday with clouds and periods of rain.

SPRING CHILL: A pattern flip means much colder air for Alabama next week. Some North Alabama communities won’t get out of the 50s Monday, and lows will drop into the 30s Tuesday morning. Frost will be likely over at least the northern half of the state, with a freeze for colder spots. Most of the week will be dry… See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1960: The first weather satellite, TIROS 1 (Television and Infra Red Observation Satellite,) began sending pictures back to earth. The TIROS series would have little benefit to operational weather forecasters because the image quality was low and inconsistent. The most important understanding achieved from the new technology was the discovery of the high degree of organization of large-scale weather systems, a fact never apparent from ground and aircraft observations.

sup Trey, we were going to use it for first night meeting spot for our moto trip. Going to run new parts of the south east BDR. Does look like a cool spot. Good place to leave trucks a couple of days without someone messing with.

Morning all! Sold another one of my items and the buyer tipped me off to a website called pirateship.com, a web based shipping site. Fill out size of box and weight and print label for UPS. Instead of UPS charging me $57 per box it only cost me $22. Dropped them off today and UPS accepted them with no issues. Was really getting tired of the outrageous costs for UPS and USPS over the last few years.

    sounds like fun!

I’ve been watching the thread from the shadows. The bikes y’all are running seem like a fun time. Cool minimalist way to cover some ground and camp.

    From AlabamaWX

SUMMER PREVIEW: Alabama’s weather will feel more like June as we are forecasting highs in the upper 80s for most places through Saturday. A few communities could reach the 90 degree mark for the first time this year… these temperatures are right at record levels for early April. And, the same strong upper ridge aloft responsible for the heat will also keep most of the storms just north and west of Alabama through Saturday.

SPC has defined a “high risk” (level 5/5) of severe thunderstorms for parts of the Mid-South late this afternoon and tonight, including West Tennessee, but high resolution models keep almost all of this activity over West Tennessee and North Mississippi through the night. A shower or storm could drift into the northwest corner of Alabama late tonight, but most of the state will be dry.

We note there is a wind advisory in effect for a decent part of Alabama today; winds out of the south will average 12-25 mph, with gusts to 30/35 mph possible.

Alabama’s weather will stay mostly dry through Saturday as the waves of showers and storms will stay to the north and west. A major flood threat will likely unfold from Arkansas to Ohio over the next four days, where rain amounts of 5-10 inches are likely.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be another dry and very warm day with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Then, as the ridge breaks down, showers and storms will finally move into the state after midnight Saturday into Sunday. SPC has all of Alabama in a severe weather risk, but it remains too early to be specific about the magnitude of the threat. The event looks very similar to what we experienced on Monday of this week; hopefully it will be mainly a big rainmaker with some small hail and gusty winds, but that remains to be seen. We will be able to provide more details later this week. Rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely.

NEXT WEEK: Much colder air invades the Deep South. Temperatures will likely drop into the 30s across the northern half of the state by Tuesday and Wednesday morning with potential for frost; a few colder spots could see a late season freeze. And, for now much of the week looks dry. See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.

STORM SURVEY: The tornado that moved through Dothan Monday was rated EF-1 by the NWS in Tallahassee; it was down for 3.11 miles with the peak wind was estimated at 105 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: An F3 tornado tore through Dallas, TX. 10 people were killed, and 216 were injured. Total damage was $1.5 million. This tornado was among the most photographed and studied in history.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Severe thunderstorms spawned fifty-six tornadoes in the central U.S., including seventeen in the Red River Region of Texas and Oklahoma. The tornadoes claimed thirty lives and injured 383 other persons. A violent tornado near Messer, Oklahoma left only the carpet tack strips on the slab of a house it destroyed and carried a motel sign thirty miles.
