Thanks for the info. I'll just let it expire probably. I think the shortest term they have is 6 months, which I signed up for. Was only $30. Guess i'll just switch back to pandora too.

Looks like there's no snow...I was wanting to go camping down there soon but wasnt sure if I was able to gain access to the spot I usually go to. But seeing the lack of snow gives me hope.

Hehe. Yes it is :D. I don't get to drive the rigs though :(.

I think we might need a new driller though if anyone likes field work and operating drill rigs.... Not sure if the position has been filled or not as of now

If it's still open, it's a tough but rewarding job. You get to see a bunch of areas of the state you probably wouldn't otherwise, get to work with some neat equipment, and not fail.

I've worked with a lot of awesome drillers, they're some of the most resourceful in my opinion. Failing is not an option for them, which I like since it's not an option for me either.

What kind of training/degree do you need for a job like that?

Well there are two sides to the job. One is the drilling side where you operate the equipment and have (most of) the fun. when you aren't in the field you are in the shop welding and fixing equipment. There are various drill shops around town but I believe that the state of alaska only requires you to have a CDL. And I think that as long as you are willing to get one they will work with you. Don't quote me on that though.

The other side is the geology side which is what I do. I don't operate the equipment. I do help set up and carry stuff and cut down trees and such though. Apparently I don't have to do that but I hate standing around... and they drillers have to do most of the heavy work anyway so I try to be helpful. Basically my job is to plan the project. Figure out where to drill and try to keep some sort of schedule for things. I also log all the samples. When not in the field, i submit samples and write reports about the dirt I collected in the field. I have a civil engineering degree but most of the people that do my job have a geology degree of some sort.

A usual crew for my kind of job is 3--- 2 drillers and a geologist. Working for the DOT, I drill for roads and airports. When I say airports I mean Ted Stevens all the way to the village landing strips. I have done a fair bit of work on Ted Stevens from my construction work (7R runway) and drilling (7R runway, taxiway L) and also worked in Chignik Bay and Chevak. I get to see a lot of places that I wouldn't have an opportunity to otherwise. I know Steve (Alaskan toy) does some drilling stuff for Michael Baker and his projects are a little different.

Whew, that was a little long winded. haha :)

Oh, and I have your stickers... whenever I get back in town :)

it aint a bad gig :D

If anyone has a civil/geo degree we are gonna be hiring in a few months prolly. Boss says he ideally wants someone just out of school for an entry level position. Sexperience helps but is not needed. Could use some more tacomas around the office ;)
