And please notice the pole I was using to catch my 6 that day was smaller than the average black man's penis.

I have the utmost respect for the commercial guys, but unfortunately whenever they're out in the water fishing slows down for me. A little competition doesn't hurt

Mid-water trawl for pollock, and longline for Halibut.

Pretty sure that I'll be moving on to a Bering Sea Pollock Trawler as of Jan 1st of next year. Big step up for me, and it's what I've always wanted to do.

Roger - looks like your picture is a seiner, alongside a tender. That hose on the big boat is actually attached to a fish pump; think Dyson vacuum x10.

It's always refreshing to hear other peoples' perspective on an industry that is relatively small. Especially when that perspective is different from the Greenpeace "rape and pillage" portrayal of commercial fisherman and the industry.

Yes, the job definitely has it's romantic side to it - being out on the sea, freedom, seeing scenery that about .001% of the general population ever see. However, the danger will always be there. I do my best to be prepared through safety training and gear.
    NOICE!!!!

My parents are visiting from RI - dad caught a couple of Silvers today, he's stoked!

Thanks for the comments - I'll get some more pictures up soon. Long day on the boat today, pretty toasted.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Probably going to sound really stupid, but is it as dangerous as the media makes it out to be? I know it's not safe by any means, but the media has a way of stretching things to make for more dramatic headlines, hence more $$$ in profit. Looks like an exciting job though! Can't beat Alaskan scenery for a workplace I don't think.

Yes, this is a dangerous job - although deadliest catch and the like have definitely done all they can to glamorize the risks. That's why I'm not a fan. Also, featuring deckhands that are irresponsible and dangerous. Yes it gets ratings: but I think it also perpetuates the stereotype that all fisherman are drunks/crazy, etc.

Yes, I do enjoy tying one on occasionally... But, I'm also a USCG licensed captain, STCW - all that jazz. I love my job. It's a career and a lifestyle. Yes, when things go sideways it can get somewhat exciting out there.

What tonnage is your license for Jake? I have one as well, not trying to see who has the biggest johnson, I'm just curious. Mine's a 100 ton and I've found it isn't good for too much. Although it lead directly to the job I have now which is a good one so I'm happy about that. A 500 ton or higher would be much better.

    Haha!

    I've got my 100 Ton Master, 200 Ton Mate's.

I agree with you about the 100 Ton not really being good for a whole lot; they are pretty common. I got mine just to get my foot in the door, since the Coast Guard is planning on some kind of mandatory licensing for fishing capt.'s within five years.

Also, it's another thing to put on my resume - looks better for the insurance company if I'm running a boat.

Looks like bay permits are on the way down... Still kicking myself in the ass for not jumping on one when they were 30k...

    Jake
