Kodiak here. Just got my taco in April, shipped here from Fairbanks Cadillac. Active duty USCG, but originally from Fort Collins CO.

Another new arrival in Fairbanks (North Pole). Just drove up from AZ. Should be an interesting winter since I got a brand new 2WD right before I got this job in AK. Need to keep it for a few years at least before I can afford a 4WD.

welcome to the North Pole!!! Where are you living?

I mostly drove my taco in 2WD over the winter, without any problems. If I were you, I would spring for some studded tires, and put a couple hundred pounds of sand in the back, and you should be good.

I still need to get winterized. Heaters this month and tires next. Lived in Anchorage 20 years ago and got by with only a block heater and regular tires. But up here I know I will need battery and trans heaters as well. And studded tires.

Some pics of the drive up. Bed fully loaded and a couch on top. Made the drive in 6 days and the couch came thru fine. I'm almost down on the axle though. Thought the frost heaves on the ALCAN were going to snap my driveline or axle.

Last year we had a pretty mild winter, and everyone is expecting quite a cold one this year. I'm actually looking at getting a trickle charger for my battery so I'll still have a charge when it drops below -40.

What kind of tires are you getting? I got some studless blizzaks, and they worked great for me.

    I'm out in 12-mile Village.

I need to research blizzaks, a coworker mentioned them also.

not yet, i have some but not installed yet..... waiting to do the BLHM before i install........and i have no fog lights.....................yet. I think Fairbanks has some great trails, at least the ones i went on, can't remember the name of the street but just south of badger road...... I have heard from some places to go trail riding but havent' found anyone doing anything or my work schedule wouldn't allow it.......... oh well i will venture on my own at the very least.

mostly just trails near my house, West Beaver lake, i used to own a titan and trying to meet up with others was just not happening, besides my needs changed and i downsized to the taco and i wished i would have bought one years ago, to after market is amazing compared to the almost non existent Nissan........Jims creek is always a blast, i haven't really 4x4 there but soon enough, i was came back from valdez and was wishing i would drove there as the rental i had and drove some roads the river beds looked promising.......until then i guess i am on my own unless you want to venture the area some time i am down.

Yeah, So you live kinda out by the big lake area. I bet they got some nice trails up there. Do you ever go four wheeling or snowboarding out there. I went Snowmaching out on big lake last year it was really fun.

I’ve been out to buffalo mine (just past Palmer) a few time and there were some good trails.

I don't have a lift on my truck or big tires everything is stock, would I be good to go or would it be better if i just four wheeled the trail. I did the Trail out to Jim's creek no problem is it more extream than that. Here is a vid of me and my friend with his weird brother out at Jim's mobbing his Jeep last year. We got stuck in a puddle and a nice Alaskan pulled us out with is four wheeler ha.[IMG]
