Haha yeah most of them are white. I bet a handheld wouldn't be a terrible idea. I've actually had some surveyors buy them from me for that purpose, so fines must not be given out too often.

Some do, but the FCC regulates output power on all radios sold to the public to be no higher than 25 watts. So that kind of puts a damper on things ;)

Most villages in remote ak use the VHF radios because of their reliability. I wonder if its sort of a blind eye rule up here us being so unique in climate and positioning.

Yeah, it covered well on the rings and cupholders, but I tried the A/C vents twice and couldn't get the wrinkles out. Might save my remaining material and take it to someone good at it.

Just a few comments before I hit the sack tonight...

VHF radios are "line of site" similar to CBs. You are right that the USCG has powerful equipment to pick up transmission from these units far beyond line of site....I've talked with ComSta Kodiak from the north side of the Alaska peninsula with mine (I have 4). But normally I can't talk with anyone else past say five miles on the water...throw in some hills/mountains and that will drop significantly. As was stated licenses are not required, I had NO idea fines for unauthorized use were so steep! That said though I'm pretty sure unauthorized use for us would mean using the wrong set of frequencies. The marine band is different from other bands (of frequencies) Many pilots out there can tell you that they have VHFs in their planes for air to ground comms and BP, ConocoPhillips, Exxon, etc... all use VHFs here on the slope for their field employees to communicate with each other. So I think if you decide to go VHF over CBs its just a matter of getting the right band. Make sense? Aaaaaand most of the bush pilots I know all have marine band VHFs anyway! But I guess two wrongs don't make a right, meaning just because they do it doesn't make it legal... Good VHFs cost hundreds of dollars...I assume CBs are cheaper than that, but I don't own any of those so I just can't say for sure.

^This. You may be right, illegal use may only be from operating on the wrong channel. Don't go chatting on Ch. 16/9 or 21/22 and you should be good for the most part. And knowing the other channels would be wise as well. And the $10k was just a number I saw on a couple sites that looked kind of old. So who knows how accurate that is.

VHF ftw? Remember, it's white! Haha. Still on the fence on this one. I'll make some phone calls tomorrow and see what I can stir up. Worse comes to worse, I'm friends with the governor and he can bail me out of jail.

Well Ben has a get outta jail free card so that is a plus in the VHF column!:bananadance:

Seriously though, after even a few minutes looking online it looks to me that just your basic VHF is quite a bit more expensive than a nice CB. Good thing is though, CBs are cheap A Uniden Pro 520 is ~$50 (even less on some sites). I also see many of the VHF antennas or in excess of $100.

So it will be more expensive to go the VHF route, which may be totally fine. I'm just putting it out there.

Also for you Storm Troopers out there many of the antenna for VHFs are WHITE!

    BOOM!

^see! This guy knows what I'm talkin about! Hahahaha, still on the fence for me. How difficult would it be to wire both? In the event you don't have coverage on one you could use the other
