@b_r_o I need your help dawg. What are my options for fitting 285’s with stock wheels. What worries me is the UCA rub so I’ll need spacers for sure, but too much poke is goofy. Would a .25” work with extended wheel studs? BORA makes custom spacers and I don’t mind spending the extra cash to do it right the first time.

The only spacers I've had were always hubcentric (bora, spidertrax) and never smaller than .75 inch. I don't trust the thinner "floating" ones that need longer studs or extended threads but that's just me.

.75 BORA would be the thinnest and safest that I can think of. They may poke a little but it shouldn't be too bad, it would probably look good. But I know what you mean, the wheel and tire needs to be under the fender to keep the stock look.

I went and found some FJ wheels for my 255s. I've heard they'll clear the UCA with 285s

If I can acquire a .25 HUBCENTRIC spacer, would that work?

I’m also looking to keep the Sport wheels, but if I can’t find anything then I’ll settle for the TRD 4Runner wheels. Those seem the be the only OEM wheels that work with 285’s.

They have to be at least .75 because the spacer holds it's own set of 6 lugs. There has to be some meat there. Anything thinner would just bend and break. It's the difference between just sandwiching a spacer in between the wheel and brake rotor (and using extended lugs or nuts) or mounting a hubcentric spacer at the end of the axle with its own lugs and mounting face (a true extension of the axle). The other thing that sketches me out about the this spacers is they will push the wheel center away from that circle "lip" on the hub so the wheel can't rest on it. Up and down, the wheel will be "hanging" on the threaded studs only. There will be no help from that lip in the center of the hub face

If you want to stick with factory alloys from your 3rd gen era I would dig around and see what oem wheels have the best offset, like those 4runner wheels you're talking about (trail teams I think?)

I’ve seen guys who even get the actual wheels Modded by a machine shop if there dead set on using ‘em. Example comes to mind it was a ‘70 Monte Carlo with a 454 & Vette like wheels. Only wheels I’ve every seen that balanced with practically no weights. Shop did a great job.

You're running into the same dilemma I (and alot of others ) ran into. I really like the simplicity and sublety of factory alloys but they limit you on tire width. All you have is spacers for help. That's why guys bite the bullet and get custom offset wheels

I'm slowly becoming a skinny tire guy. The way my 255s feel in the snow is night and day compared to anything wider I've ever had. But snow isn't really a concern for Eric lol

One last word on offsets. Big offsets add additional load to the front bearings bc of the difference in loading. If that’s not a concern then forge on & good luck.

Block heaters good for a while too I’ll bet. :)

My friend Jerry has been my tire guy for 40 years now. Still think he wears grad year pants just like me.

These are the only OEM wheels I’d rock other than the Sport wheels.

Another option is this. 34x10.50xR17 KO2’s. It is essentially 265/80/17 so it’s a true 33” tire once mounted and under the weight of the truck but its slightly wider than a 265.

265/80 is a lot of tire, you might be wishing you had a regear

If those have a similar offset to my FJ wheels just put 285/70 on them and it would look great. That would keep you in the 32 inch range and you wouldn't feel so under geared.

Oh I was planning on tuning and gearing even with 285’s.
