But the important part is making sure the cooling system is being filled correctly with no air pockets. Your buddies vacuum fill system is legit if he knows how to use it properly

 

So right now the radiator and reservoir just have water, I had a full reservoir this morning so let me go check if the level went down any. As far as I can see, there doesn’t seem to be a leak anywhere. All hoses to and from the radiator are dry.

Air pressure through a hose goes through a fitting with a venturi in it (like a carb) and creates a vacuum on the cooling system, even sucks the rubber hoses flat.. and then then vacuum is used to suck coolant in with much less chance of air pockets

I hope this fixes the heating issue. I know my knowledge is shit, but if it were a head gasket then wouldn’t my truck be running like shit? Like I said, everything seems normal except for the heating. Truck starts up fine and idles good, and also drives normal fast or slow.

 

Headgaskets can do weird stuff when they leak. Sometimes no symptoms at all except slow loss of coolant. All the way up to rough running, misfire codes, coolant barfing out the overflow reservoir, severe overheating, etc. It can be hard to nail down if you don't work on cars every day

First things first, get the system full with no air pockets. Then block test if it keeps overheating.

If the overheating is fixed with getting the system full, watch the level for a few weeks and see if it slowly drops

 

How much we talking on the low and high side of fixing the head gasket?

It would (and should) get timing chains, guides, tensioner, water pump, tune up parts like spark plugs and filters. all the gaskets needed including OEM headgaskets.. and the cyl heads should go to a machine shop and get checked for warpage, cracks, and bad valves

@b_r_o Ok, let the engine cool then started her up with the radiator cap off. Didn’t see any bubbles foam up, but noticed the coolant started to raise up to the top of the radiator cap. Forgot to mention, that my engine temp doesn’t take long to reach normal operating temperature so I haven’t scratched the thermostat out of the picture just yet. Going to perform the blue liquid test either by myself or at a mechanic shop.

15 minutes of driving 55 and this is as high as it goes. Also pretty much only starts doing this after the first red light stop.

Im hoping for a thermostat, water pump, or plain air in the system. What’s weird is that the temp gauge redlined yesterday but no smoke or anything. Popped the hood and engine temp felt normal.
