I had similar thoughts on top plate spacers a while back, but have since then come to this conclusion.

The stock shock has 8" of travel. 4 up and 4 down. general when lifting a truck using a coilover or preload spacer (stay away from those too) say...3" you lose 3" of downtravel. when using a top load spacer you maintain the 4" of up and 4" of down travel. with 3" of lift and another 4" of potential down travel you can very easily break a number of components including shocks, tie rods, sway bars, cv axles, lower ball joints, and upper control arms.

That's my take on it but there may be a few flaws

i thought the point of lifting your truck was creating a more offroad capable, tougher suspension. not stock suspension that's just higher.

true, but some people just like to have the "look" of an offroad rig. lifts like spacers or drop brackets are solely for looks and stuffing bigger tires.

I put spacers in my Truck right after I got it. I hadn't found this site yet (wish I would have). My truck rode like absolute crap. The ride in my dads old 86 F250 was much better than mine with the spacers. I had the spacers taken off the next day.

Listen to everyone telling you not to do it. They are right.

I live in Reno, NV any suggestion who I should take it to to have the work done? 5100billies and AAL. Is that what I need, will I have the travel you stated ? And how is the Billies installed ? Do I need a different spring. I like the stock ride and want to be close to it.

I have a spacer lift and i seriously only can notice a driving difference when it is super windy and when im driving it feels like my truck is on a cloud floating other than that i have had 0 issues with it. I do not go out beating my truck on trails but i have been out to a few times and have had no problems. Its really Personal opinion and what your willing to spend. IM happy for now with mine.

I put Icons on my FJ and they were awsome but a little stiff. Just want to do the right thing and not go broke (Icon coil overs 1900$)

No offense but you put $2000 in coilovers on your fj and the ride was stiff and your wondering what a $300 spacer kit will do for you?
Did you put the icons on yourself or have a shop do the work?
billies are pretty straitforward and fairly simple to install. With a few friends and a couple of hrs on a saturday you could save yourself some money.
I'm sure people on the forum in your area would lend a hand as well.
    Good luck.

Spacer lifts pre-load your shocks and springs...thus giving a rougher ride and limiting travel....If you hit something hard enough (like a speed bump or pot hole or what ever) you risk snapping your struts and doing so other damage! I have a spacer lift now but I'm getting rid of it next month. I'm going with Bilstein 5100s all around, OME 885 springs and a Toytec 2" AAL.

    Shit....crap!

Your right 1900 vs 300$ do I need a new spring kit w/ the billies or just the billies? Thanks for your help.
