It's like wrapping your cellphone in aluminum foil. Too much shielding. Same thing neneago mentioned too. All antennas need to be tuned.

At one point, I designed a flip key housing many years ago thinking I would be able to integrate the antennae into the case. It was just a housing for the OEM key fob internals.

Had the whole thing CNC machined. Came out a beauty. Was sturdy had perfect tolerances. Used brass as the bearings for the flip. Quality springs as the torsion point. The works.

It was metal. No matter what, it basically wasn't allowing the signal out. Couldn't tint the antennae, didn't have the proper gear to do so and it was costly. Tried to just ground it. Nothing.

Fyi. It was for my Jeep Cherokee limited. So it was doomed from the start ;)

At the time, there were some awesome underground forums with the files to write to new chips so you could clone different remotes. Like most awesome sites like that, and the nature of the content, it was inevitably hacked and taking down

    Neneago,

I was at the dealership today and they were selling the KeyBox all-in-one units. I didn't get a chance to look too close, but it appears these are made so you can put your circuitboard into the unit and then have the key cut. Would something like this be easier? I found the company website. Maybe you can use your connections and order some of these units http://2m2.com.tw/

Ok. My findings. Using an open parking lot with my truck between 2 vehicles with a clean line of sight. Brand new batteries in the Toyota wireless key fob and in the VW clone flip. I held both keys in the same position, at my waist 3.65' off the ground.

    VW flip clone - 102.64'
    Toyota fob - 147.37'

EDIT: -> distance was measured at the license plate on the front bumper. Approximately 6 feet from where the box (receiver) is located behind the dash on the passenger side

Here are some pics of a clone key by ilco. Contains the battery. If you drop one of these and it lands on its side. Watch out, it launches the key in two. One piece stays on your key ring, the key portion gets launched into the abyss.

Skygear is crazy!! lol!! Thanks for the test!!

The remote key works great if you point key blade towards car and hold down button.

Most hardware stores have outdated equipment that clones keys onto bulky battery required keys. I do clone keys for online orders but I use the latest in chips. They are the same size as an OEM chip. This allows key to be OEM size and NEVER will require battery.

Hoping to see a reliable and sturdy flip key. Interesting to watch the progress. Would be nice to be able to put my key back in my pocket without stabbing my junk. Have it on a carabiner on a belt loop now. BTW, I bought an unconventional spare key for the Prius from the OP and it works great.

Yakoma.... discovered that prius key by accident while messing around with my prius key. Have sold now over 1000 keys around the world.

Currently manufacturer is not going to make any VW flip keys. They told me they "might" have a batch made for me in the future.

Ok , got a nicely wrapped package in the mail today , I'm one happy ol' grumpy sob....

So , dig out the Nokia Lumia 1020 w/41mpx camera and here's a review - many HUGE thanks to Neneago for doing all this , amazing work here folks .

    Blah , blah , blah - here's the pics first -

    all key versions comparison.jpg

length diff oem vs all in one 1.jpg

length diff oem vs all in one 2.jpg

oem vs flip key length 1.jpg

oem vs flip key length 2.jpg

    flip key logo.jpg

    flip key front.jpg

    flip key open front.jpg

    flip key side 1.jpg

    flip key side open.jpg

Initial overall comparison shows some serious quality here , both versions of the all-in-keys are quite stout and have a nice quality feel and heft to them . None of that "too light" feel and all materials seem top-notch . Impressed with that part for sure . Honestly , right on par with the oem key set in fit and finish . That is not easy to do , and it should be said .

If you note in the photos - sorry for the case of arthritis shakes today - weather here is damp and my meds aren't really doing the job ....

The 3-button all in one key is somewhat bigger in size compared to the oem Toyota key . However , it does not require the fob and to me that is a huge plus . The all-in-one as I mentioned above has a very nice heft and feel to it . Plastic doesn't seem to be the cheap variety and should have no issues with UV exposure and seems to have a very high durability to it , unlike most aftermarket products . Key cutting is absolutely top-notch . I have local old-school locksmiths in this area that have handled re-key and copy duties for me in the past , especially on my old Land Cruiser which has a sob of an ignition lock to copy correctly . Neneago's cut work is absolutely dead-on and very crisp - unlike the dealer-cut replacements . I'm glad I never used or had to replace the spare key my wife has , it gave us a nice oem original that had little to no wear . Neneago's copy actually looks much nicer - kudos for that as most cutters do an honestly pretty sloppy job including the Toyota dealers ....

The flip key is awesome and has some serious heft . I wouldn't hesitate to use it as a self-defense weapon , not kidding . The flip hinge area that is such a huge problem even with OEM VW keys is pretty much fixed - this thing is stout and I'm impressed with that . Action is nice and crisp and has not one hint of slop in how the button works . Locks open/closed quite crisp for how it has to be built , buttons feel great and have a nice audible "click" to them . Bonus is the transmit light - nice to have in the dark for sure . The outer metal frame appears to be solid stock and the plating is top quality - pretty amazed with this part and explains the hefty feel of it . The logo insert has a nice clear depth and has somewhat of a 3-D look to it and gives the unit a great quality look - as someone took pride in making the overall design . Rare these days and should be noted - I hate no-quality cheap crap as most of our world is going this direction . Like things that last and this looks to do that job well .

Things in initial comparison and slight dislikes/notes -

There is no panic button on the flip key - and frankly I don't mind nor care . I'll use the key for self-defense if necessary , ex-Marine here so anything can be a weapon - old men don't get old by being stupid ...

Both the flip key and single all-in-one key have a nice plastic case , but it is a bit slick for me . Again , older guy with bad arthritis and I work construction/welding - so dry skin and anything slick in the winter is a pain in my Irish arse . Not that big of a deal , hell I drop my phone a lot as well as pretty much everything else .

Other than that , no real dislikes or things I feel should be noted - just another opinion and we all know opinions are like assholes , every has one .
I will say this - I've been seriously accused of being OCD , anal and very picky overall , but I know what I like and I'm fair when I review something . I prefer integrity and honesty in writing reviews because other people at times use those in making purchase decisions - and to me integrity is a lot more important than kissing someone's ass to get a freebie or something .

So , to be completely up-front here - I paid for the all-in-one key after asking Santiago what I owed him for all this . He only charged for that key and the flip key is for a test , but frankly I'd rather just pay for it and stay honorable all-around - besides , it's worth the money to me anyway .

I've been in quite a few internet and otherwise arguments over giving bad reviews since I'm flat out point blank in my opinion of a product . Hey , I tell it like it is and being a mechanically-driven old school sort it's tough for me not to give a solid all-points opinion of something . Especially if I know anyone might drop their hard-earned money on a product and use any of my input . So take it for what it's worth - and make up your own mind but in my opinion you can't go wrong with this guy and his service/products .

    'Nuff said....

I specified that I wanted both types if possible and offered to completely pay for both - don't have an issue for paying my way in Life and this guy is doing some very quality work . In fact , when I rebuild the old Land Cruiser and install all new locks/ignition he's gonna get them all to make a single fitting key since Cruisers use at least two between ignition/door locks and the fuel doors . I like shit that lasts , usually keep my vehicles for at least 300,000 miles and 10-15yrs on average . When I'm done with it , the boneyards don't even want 'em .

Sarge...thanks for the excellent write-up. One question for you...how did the remote features of the key test out for you? Distances from truck, etc?

    Thanks.
