I notice it's very rare that people say "Don't get the tires I chose because they suck and I made a mistake." I have had Duratracs and BFG KO in BC winters and found both to be terrible. I've used Toyo all terrains in winter on a work rig (Tahoe 4wd). I can't fathom for the life of me why people think all of these tires so shit hot in winter. Are you all just comparing them to mud tires and dungflops? The snowflake means they paid for the testing and certification and the threshold to meet is extremely low. Something like 10% better than standard all season tire performance. Maybe the new BFG's are really that much better. My old KO's had the snowflake rating too though and they sucked on ice.

OP for the list of priorities you gave I think you're mostly looking for a cool looking tire that performs well overall. Duratracs are always going on 25% off up here. Cooper AT3 are really well-reviewed and are pretty cheap. Same goes for Hankook's ass-to-mouth I mean ATM.

If you want to spend a few more bucks I'd recommend Cooper ST Maxx for awesome looks and equally impressive performance. For phenomenal on-road traction (and longevity) Michelin is king. And FWIW, my Michelin MS2's are handling icey roads (unsalted, unsanded) as well as most dedicated winter tires I've tried.

I've been looking at the Cooper ST Maxx. But I'm just curious if there is any brand that runs larger than others cause i am gonna settle with 265/75s but i would ideally want something between that and a 285/75

Some manufacturers carry 275/75/16 but they're not much larger than 265s. The gains with a 275 are almost nothing at around 0.25" of extra clearance.

You also have to remember that the same tire will work totally different on two different types of trucks. A 1st Gen and a 2nd will have different behavior since they are so different in size and weight. I have bought Duratracs, KO, KO2, MS, MS2 and Grabbers with my own hard earned cash. I have MS2 on our 04 2500 GMC and 97 4runner. Best tire for street use and daily driver I have ever had. We have three 1st gens 99EX, 02EX & 04DC. We hit the trails hard in the winter and the Duratracs are the best Winter tire I have ever used on a 1st Gen. Yes I still have to use chains but when they are needed, you would with any tire. The 265/75r16 C are on my wife's 04 and she now drives it as here daily driver since she felt more comfortable in the winter with it than her Volvo XC90. She just got them rotated this week and they are now at 11/32nds with 38k, we will be replacing them with the same tire on the next oil change in 5K. I believe that if you offroad a ton a 50% tire is a bald tire. I have KO's on my 99 and have had them on two Suburbans and a Chevy 1500 and they are OK tires but have let me down in the winter and rain. The 99 is getting Duratracs 265/75r16 E this week when the wheels show up. I am trying a different sidewall just to see if they run better or worse. The 99 is our tow rig for our offroad camper. The 02 has Grabbers AT2 and they have been good tires but don't have the life and some of the same problems as the KO and KO2's. We will be trying the Grabber X3 on it since this truck is a dedicated offroader and I want to try them out. I have heard nothing but good thing about Cooper and have not tried them. I know the 2nd Gen guys love them.

Whats wrong with the 33's on now? Is there really that much difference between 33's and the 265/75/16?

He doesn't like the loss of power and the cutting it requires

I'm wanting a similar set of tires and don't mind about any power loss but what kind of cutting would have to be done? Say with a 3 inch lift.

You'd need wheel spacers or 4.5" wheels to help clear the UCA's. You'd need to do a cab mount chop if you off-road, and some minor trimming to the fender liner. That's all I had to do with 285/75/16s. 33x12.5s need a lot more work and decreases power a bit more.

I don't really want to have to cut anything major so I guess 265, 275 is the way to go?

Got 15k on a set of cooper AT3's now, no complaints. Road noise is good and they grip nicely in the rain, ok in snow but not 'certified'. Chose them over the ST Maxx because the Maxx's are really heavy, something like 65lbs+ each. If you're looking to pick up some mpg less rotating mass will help.

Did you do any trimming or wheel spacers or did you just put them on and dealt with the rubbing?

I did the pinch weld mod with a hammer and grinder. I was gonna do some more cutting but it would have to be more than I want to do.

You cut out a piece if plastic that sticks out behind the front wheel and you either hammer or grind the weld seam that is under the plastic. You can look it up for a better explanation. Its really common
