For real. My Stache needs new rubber and it's ultra slim pickings right now.

My hardtail also needs new rubber. What recommendations do people have for trail tires that also roll well on pavement since it's my commuter too. I've run Ikons and some bikepacking tires from teravail that were pretty good.

I ran Ikon on the rear, Ardent on the front on my cross country bike, worked well.

I haven't tried the ardent, I'll have to give that a go. I've never felt very confident with ikon on the front. I also probably just need to accept that any decent trail tire is not gonna be great on pavement and vice versa.

Yeah...I don't know of any trail tries that are amazing on pavement. Combination of rubber compound and any amount of tread design and you're looking at a relatively inefficient road ride. :/ That said, Probably ardent races or ikon races for trail tries to take on the pavement?

The Bontrager XR2 (old name Chupacabra) does really well for general XC riding. Thats what came standard on my Stache and it does pretty well when doing bikepacking, town bike, commuter duty.

The Specialized ones are quite good. The Purgatory and the Butcher are basically just DHR/DHF copies.

I *think* the Vigilante or the Judge is the model you seek.

Worldwide Cyclery does a lot of good youtube videos explaining the different models of tire brands.

The only thing they don't do that I wish they did was say" If you like a DHF/DHR, then the comparable models are X and Y from these other brands. Trying to cross Shop WTB, Spec, Bonty, and Maxxis is far from easy and intuitive.

Knoxville is rapidly moving to the next place on my riding destinations list. Every time I read/hear anything about it, it's always praise.

Vittoria makes some fast-ish trail tires that I've been very happy with as far as wear goes called the Aggaro. They are significantly outlasting the WTB weirwolfs and Maxxis ikons that I have used previously, and they have great grip on hard and dusty over hard trail surfaces. I'd say they may even corner better than the weirwolfs. They don't seem to chunk the corners of the side knobs like the Maxxis did, either. All that said, I have not used them on the road. Good luck finding any, though. I think I saw some 29x2.3 online but not much else.

I've had two separate groups from Michigan travel to Knoxville just to ride bikes. You can too!

That’s what I’m running on my stumpy, they’re like Velcro here in southern Utah. I almost like them as much as the maxxis dhf /dhrs

Ha, almost any tire is like velcro on the slick rock down there! I usually worry more about durability than grip when I head south.
