That post got me looking into update/upgrade, vs just replacing.
Nothing wrong with the Trek. Just after going back and forth, I prefer the simplicity of the 1x, and slightly more slacked geometry...

And I know nothing about dealing with derailleur, etc.. so, need to find someone that could give a hand... had it priced a while ago(staying with XT), was gonna be 1k for a LBS.... I passed obviously

That seems high. After I did my 1x upgrade, my wife realized she needed to replace her worn 2x drivetrain and got 1x12 Eagle GX. She didn’t want me to do the work so she used an LBS, and it was about $700 with parts. And that included a new crank to get the chain line right … I just played with spacers and with 11 vs 12 it works fine. Mine was also less because I shopped around for mix and match parts online. The angle set was only $75 but I have a headset press and install was easy. Beat $75 investment for an older geo bike in my opinion.

    NOT MINE

Seems like a reasonable deal. Includes two wheelsets. Could be a good do it all rig for someone that doesn't have to have to latest longest slackest geo or uber steep seat tubes. An angle set could modernize the geo if desired.

yep...started riding in the early 80's on an 81 Mongoose Supergoose...I lived on a BMX bike until I could drive!! It was mostly dirt, or culverts. We didn't have skateparks in C-bus until the early 90's.

The Supergoose got stolen in 84, and I the got a used 83 Mongoose Pro Class from a friend; he wanted that back towards the end of high school, so I got a 1988 Californian Pro, which I still have, and ride, today. I don't take it to the park or anything b/c I don't want to destroy it...it is pretty mint. My step son has an SE Wildman from the early 2010's that I huff aroind on at the skatepark a bit. <----on Sunday mornings, there is a little unofficial "club" of us old guys who ride instead of going to church - it sort of IS church.

I am looking to get a newer BMX of my own to actually use at the park. Have narrowed it down to a WeThePeople Trust, Verde Vex, or Fiend Type CV. Will have to see how funds pan out this summer...

    how 'bout you?

    Yeah.
LOL, I rode a Mongoose as well, late 70's to early 80's. I pieced it together by buying parts off of friends with paper route money, so it was somewhat of a Frankenstein. Tuff Wheels, forget what forks and other parts. Basically whatever I could find for cheap. I don't know what happened to it, my little brother rode it for a while once I moved on to motorcycles and cars. Did a few local races, but they were pretty tame at the time, mainly big berms and some small jumps and a whoop section. Other than that, it was mainly transportation.

And Dirt Church is a thing.

whoa. 2800 for a carbon frame! not bad at all. although that seatpost seems rather slack.

If I understand correctly a more slack seatpost isn't as big of a deal when reach numbers aren't as large? I'm guessing been a long time since I went down the geometry rabbit hole

Yeah, it was a full XT setup. New cranks, etc. Still thought it was high.

I don't have any of the tooling, so, unless I can find someone local(ish) that does, and would be willing to help out... I'm paying someone.

I have no issue with SRAM stuff, and know nothing about their levels, GX NX, etc.

I just want to simplify, modernize a little, and go from there....

That isn't that old. Newer than mine. If it was close, I'd consider it! Right size and everything.

Overall it’s still kinda high for a nearly 5 yr/old setup and geo, but considering the current market it isn’t an outrageous asking.

Agreed on the ST angle. Modern geo and super steep ST are all the rage and what gets all the attention. Reality is all these progressive numbers aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Certain riders and terrain still find value in some less aggressive numbers.
I believe the industry as a whole really started updating frame numbers on all their bikes in the 2018-2020 range. That’s not to say anything prior to those years are pure garbage.

I fookin hate wearing camelbacks and I swore I'd never wear and hip pack... Then I unknowingly blew out a pocket and lost my phone mid-mountain on Whistler. After a several tracking and searching laps I found it under a ladder bridge..

After that fiasco I got the smallest pack High Above makes and have worn it every ride since. I don't carry a ton of shit, just wallet, phone, plug kit, levers, multitool, electrolytes. It's very easy to forget I'm even wearing it. I would rock a frame pack with no shame but I haven't had a frame that would work with one in some time. I don't think downtube storage would cut it for me either.

Yeah, just checked the numbers. I clearly don't stay up to date..

I'd like a newer bike. But.. 4-6k right now, when there is nothing WRONG with the 2 I have....

Same. I converted all my personal bikes to GX 11 speed. Sram 12 speed isn't good enough yet. Shimano 12 is excellent but $$$

yeah, I bought my Supergoose with lawn mowing money as well...I was the only kid in the hood with a bike that good at the time. Everyone else had Huffy's, or Schwinn's...there was a kid 2 streets over who had a Haro that was also awesome.

I never raced either. We were all about getting air and tricks back then...and riding in the woods. So my BMX was really my intor to MTB as well. And honestly, I was one only a few who were actually riding bikes..most of our group were skaters...I never liked to skateboard, so I just rode my bike with them and tried to emulate their tricks

I'm rocking a $2k bike and having a blast romping on it. So far, it's held up to everything I've tossed at it, just depends on how high end you want to go with the components. As things wear out, I'll replace with better parts, but it was a good point of entry.

Are you running 1x11 with an old 2x crank with a 104 bcd spider? After 3 years and on my second narrow-wide 30T chainring, with about 2mm spacing to clear the chain and give about the right chain line, I am finding that I have to keep things clean around the crank spider arms or I get occasional chain skip. Mud, bits of forest duff (common here in the wet season) or even build-up from the chain wax I used to use can cause problems, and needs to be scraped out with a tool … brushing is not really effective. I’m thinking of getting an off-brand Amazonian crank with direct attach chainring and also maybe 165-170 cranks next time I replace the chainring. Obviously a larger chain ring would help but with a 42T on the back I don’t have the legs or lungs to push more than 30T in front. Still cheaper than a new bike :)

well, with the total reach, yes. But the position it puts your butt over the bottom bracket changes and that can, arguably, affect how it feels pedalling. Being right over the bottom bracket is nice, being well behidn the BB feel slike you're more pushing against the bike to move forward. But again, all arguably.

I guess I didn't notice the year. you're absolutely right about the aggressive-ness not being evveryone's cup of tea. :D

I still think that bike's a good bike for anyone looking.

I'm still a Shimano fan boy and will typically pony up if it makes sense when buying. But I have been very pleased with the GX 11 speed that was on my hardtail I purchased second hand. Its a crisp shifter and handles my poorly timed shifting under load demands quite well. My only gripe is that its not trigger shift friendly like Shimano.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some AXS envy. Still can't bring myself to blow that kinda dough. Ready for Shimano to get back in the electronic shifting game and for some tech trickle down to the lower trim levels.

Heck, I juuust replaced my '09 Trek Fuel 8 that had 3(?) rides on it when I bought it second hand for $800 in '12. It had a few years of next to no riding due to life but the first three and last five I rode hard and often. Nary a problem that wasn't consumables. Still not 100% I won't keep it around. Though I know the likelihood I'd seriously ride it again is slim and I'd be better off offering a good deal to some young rider looking for a good but old FS to get into riding.

A friend of mine paints bikes and is very good at it.

He just did this S-Works with colours inspired by old Toyotas.
