I currently have a Kuat NV rack that I bought for our VW Golf Sportwagen in a 1.25" hitch. The Taco receiver is 2"; does it make sense to just get a 1.25"/2" converter or try and sell/trade for a rack that is a 2" hitch? I had read separately that the 2" is way more secure than the 1.25" so I think I'd be more inclined to try and sell/trade for a 2" than get a converter but curious to hear your opinions/experience if you've done the converter.

I have the Kuat sherpa 1.25 with the 2.0 adapter. It works, but requires a 3/8 locking pin (instead of the std 1/2 pin)and it is hard to find one that is long enough to go through the taco receiver. I ended up buying a tongue pin lock that was long enough. Mine has the wobble knob to adjust, so the pin just locks the rack.

Here is my mod to the 1up single rack. I milled out the recesses and holes for the tongue crossbar with a Dremel and router kit. I also flipped the 1.25 tongue so that the adapter is on top. This allows the lowered tailgate to clear the folded up rack by about an half inch.

I have a yakima rack and the spine of the rack is actually interchangeable to put on 1 1/4 or 2 inch. I don't know if kuat has the same option but the extra 120 for a new spine was way better than buying a whole new rack.

How much does this shift the rack back? And does it raise the rack, and if so, how much? And, does it only attach to the truck at the receiver or is there any other attachment such as the bumper bracket on the Taco? Thanks.

    Back maybe 4-6" I'd guess.
The one pictured here it's about 4" higher...but production will sit at hitch height.
    Only attaches to the receiver.
FYI rated for up to 300lbs if what are carrying is about the width of a 2 bike rack. If the load is larger than that space...the limit drops to 150lbs...because physics.

I have been using the http://rakattach.com/ with my yakima holdup 2 and it is awesome. It goes straight in to the hitch and keeps the rack at about the same height, but allows you to swing the whole thing out of the way. The rack sits a few inches further back than if it were inserted straight in the receiver.

    Fat bike season!
Unfortunately, the Kuat rack doesn't allow the tailgate to go down all the way without hitting the tailgate. Edit: just realized I put some bad info out, the rack pivots down and should allow clearance for the tailgate.

Great thread OP. Here is a pic test fitting my 1UP to my new Taco. Love the 1UP, had it on 2 different STi's and now the Taco. Since the receiver is now 2" I'm emailing 1UP to see if I can get the parts to convert it. 1.25" is a little wobbly with 2 bikes.
