No pads. I don't ride enough long downs to warrant knee or elbow. But was thinking of getting some ¼" foam tape used to seal truck caps/beds and putting a couple strips on that section until I can get less "puckered" and knees in

I have an older Schwinn 3x8 hybrid, basically predecessor to the modern gravel bike. I want to put a 1x or even a 2x setup on it (1x would be sweet). I have my eye on the AdventX 10sp 11-48t cassette. To keep the same climbing gear, I need a 42t chainring and I’d gain some top end. Can I slap a 42t narrow-wide chain ring on this crank and call it a day? Looks like just 4 bolts, is it that easy?

So I know it’s sketch looking, because it’s a shit build with the only measurements being the vertical boards. Let me start by saying I stood on top and shook it and it’s stable enough for that and solid. I’ll add more bracing of course to take a bike. However when you got junk wood taking up space at least mess with it some. Even if I only roll over this ramp 2-3 times a week taking the bike out. It’s better than it lying on dirt rotting.

it does look higher than it is. At the peak it’s only like 2’8”

I don't have a high clearance bumper, but I have a RCI bumper with the hitch integrated behind the plate, nice and high. The ONLY configuration that I've found that works for my very minimal clearance are the Rocky Mounts swing out racks. The issue with so many swing outs is that either the main bars that make the swing out or the latching mechanism still sits too high and would contact my tailgate, as I can't imagine that our aftermarket bumper/hitch placement is on almost any rack engineers mind when designing product.

Bought these and since I’m a half size I trimmed some excess off the toes. Tomorrow will be the test…. Hopefully.

Just slipping them on it’s obvious I now have arch support and the bubble on the ball of my foot.

The insole is a heck of a lot stiffer while also being more padded than the factory 5.10 insole.

    fingers crossed no more numbness.

Interesting. What is necessitating the swing out? You can't drop your tailgate otherwise? The 1up folds down, so I may just have to lower it completely to drop the tailgate (as opposed to keeping the tray flat when 0 bikes are on it)

I went from 5.10 Impact Pros to RC Tallacs and started getting numbness. The Impacts did have an insole, so I picked up the SQlab One11 insole. Huge difference in the shoe. Stiffer, tons more arch support (I have a high arch), and zero numbness. They're transferable so they'll last a few years.
    Big fan of these.

I'm hoping it works out if not they came from Amazon so easy enough to return.

haha, not yet. I'll complete it soon enough in my free time. Right now it's just sitting in the backyard making the neighbors wonder.

    Yeah.
I dunno, but 42t sounds really big to me for a 1x setup. Your chainline might be a bit odd while on the largest rear cog. You *should* be able to find a narrow-wide chainring that you can bolt on.

42 isn't really big for that range on a 1x. My current 1x gravel bike came with a 42 and an 11-50. I now have a 44 and a 10-50 and am much happier with the bigger gears without losing much on the low end.

Depends on your strength and terrain though.

to swap chainrings, yea its just the 4 bolts. gotta be sure the new ring is the same bcd or whatever the measurement is. id be more worried about the chain line being center enough so it doesn't pop off while riding.

if youre just city commuting and nothing too intense, you could make it work. if you're on trails away from stuff, you could get frustrated

I agree, 42t sounds big but it’s the same low end that I have now with the 3x system. Figure if I keep the same low end and I can climb anything I’ve needed to so far, should be good to go. Trying to find a 42t chain ring now!
It’s an odd BCD, seems like 104 which seems hard to find with a 42t. I found an Amazon special, may give it a go. 38t seems more common. It’s an early hybrid, but it basically does road duty now so chain jump shouldn’t be an issue hopefully.
I’m hoping I can space the chainring off the crank using washers within reason to center it within the cassette.

I appreciate the help, I’m still learning and finding info on the older systems is not always easy.
