@whitedlite my road and gravel are both carbon. I like it, and would love to have it on all my bikes. Perhaps I will on the next MTB. Who knows! The carbon Evo I looked at was $6200, and the Alloy was also $6200 but dialed up on components.

And then there’s I don’t need any of it! Just stick with what I have :)

I’m happy with what I have now. Just need more time to ride it.

Well no shit but abrasion and dents are a massive part of mountain biking - except if you ride like a pansy

Your cost statement is a dumb wealthy flex and you sound like a boomer

So then both bikes suffer from some sort of weakness in MTB, not one being more reliable than the other, just one being cheaper. No one should be against any material, each fill different demands. Like how most DH bikes are now only offering aluminum. Which I think mostly has to do with cost to form Aluminum, vs cost to design and have a molding machined for carbon.

To the 2nd part that’s just your opinion man. We’re all on bikes with diminishing returns vs say any $2500 GT or Marin.

Man this Carbon/Alloy is a hotter topic than I expected.

I ride both, own both and never really cared for one over the other aside from aesthetics. Guess I'm in the *archer not the arrow* camp though.

100% DH bikes are aluminum because they're more suitable for the rigors of DH riding (more durable) which further proves my point. Carbon's best attribute is weight but durability is not comparable to aluminum

Well, there’s a lot of carbon wheels floating around the DH now and even more in EWS that are proving carbon can hold up durability wise.

We’re talking frames, and every impact is different. IMO any hit that would break or crack a carbon frame is going to break or dent an aluminum frame to the point it must be replaced.

Id love to see a lab test where they take frames and do stress tests with them. I know they’re out there, but I have yet to see a company show the impact resistance of the aluminum and carbon frames for side impacts. Think take a weight and drop it into side of frame and see which stays straighter longer and then see which one has damage beyond riding first.

BTW, the only other bike I truly want right now is Aluminum if that puts me in your graces again :fistbump:

@Dr. Doom Says, I also have an aluminum Slash in the shop I’ve ridden a fair bit, but never took time to dial it in for me, bc it’s my brothers. I don’t think I’d notice enough time difference to say either bike is better than the other because weight is so insignificant to time. There was a video I watched where they shown how to calculate the time difference per lbs you add if you kept the same effort over a mile and it may have been a few seconds.

Pinkbike has a video from 2017 where they did stress tests on the aluminum vs carbon santa cruz nomad frame. The carbon blew the aluminum out of the water.

And to reiterate what you mentioned above, any hit that broke or cracked carbon would of annihilated an aluminum frame to the point of failure as well. Aluminum will dent, but if it didn't break the aluminum frame to the point of failure, all I would image a carbon frame would of experienced is a bounce with some scuffing.

Sorry. Not trying to cause an alloy vs. carbon storm. I just know, my line choices aren’t great and I’ve been surprised a few times that I didn’t leave a mark on my alloy frame when I’ve knocked a few rocks the past month. I do have some dings, which I’m hoping 3M wrap helps protect better now that I’ve wrapped most of the areas with it, and maybe it’s the 3M that has protected from that. I’m getting better at riding, choosing lines and my confidence has gone up a bit to keep momentum through various features. That said, I still knock rocks and noticed a nice dent in my rear wheel last week when I was cleaning the bike.

So that’s where I am coming from, that I need to be a more confident rider, that allows me to move through features rather than how I may go through now to move to carbon. But….like has been said, carbon is damn strong.

And, I think my wife may hang me by my toes if I said I wanted another bike, although I wouldn’t keep my Stumpy Comp. I’d sell that or trade it if I could.

Ok - I’m off to read the Evo info for the 1500 time :)

Can anyone point me to some good posts in here for doing a fork mount underneath a camper shell? I thought I saw a cool one where it was mounted to the tailgate. Also seems like you could potentially utilize the stock bolts to avoid drilling the bed. Anyone done that before? Will be a semi-permanent install for me, might remove it during winter is all.

I have mine mounted to a 2x4 which I cut to the width of the bed. I have a tool box secured in the bed that keeps it tight against the tail gate. Not fancy, but I've had up to 3 bike fork mounts on it together and it works well. Big thing to pay attention to is clearance against the rear glass, especially when mounting all the way at the rear of the bed. I have a Leer with a sloped piece of glass at the back and I have to set the road bike a little away from the tailgate due to the longer stem, otherwise it would hit the glass.

I did have a bed tray for a bit, but it made the bikes too tall to work effectively. I ended up removing it to gain some head height.

Nice, thanks. I have a smartcap coming any day now which has a bit of a slant as well. My mtb is pretty slack though so I think it should clear well even if the fork mount is close up to the tailgate. I figure I can reach in through the side window and secure the rear tire to the front rail to prevent the bike from moving at all.

I'm super interested to hear how it goes and hopefully see pics.

The whole carbon thing, I thought most riders at rampage rode carbon dh bikes. they take some of the nastiest spills with their bikes pretty much falling off a cliff. they pick those up and go for it again. maybe thats just super high end stuff?

anyone see this or get tickets? ill be going to the colorado springs showing.
