I think this is the safer route for sure. I'll have to look in to how much tire clearance that frame has. I like big tires on my commuters since the roads here are so terrible.

THIS! I really just love commuting on a rigid hardtail. That's what my old commuter was for years. Perhaps some alt bars and a rigid fork would be enough change to satisfy me. It'd be a lot easier than getting dropbars figured with all the brake/drivetrain components that would need to be changed.

I think a rigid fork would be a good change.

Mixing mechanical road and mtb drivetrains sounded like a pain in the ass. I think you need some ratio converters to make it work but I never dug too deep. I went AXS for road brifters and mtb derailleur (gravel bike) which is super simple but also probably not ideal for a commuter haha.

edit: I road a CX bike as my road bike in college, it was a solid bike but it felt so much less durable haha. Maybe it was just the wheels but I didn't feel anywhere near as comfortable going offroad on it as I did the singlespeed rigid bike.

    not enough.
true. the roads are not nice with real skinnies. need at least gravel thick tires to make it somewhat comfy. hahah.

    Yeah.
I have a steel Trek Sawyer that I put 2" Hookworms on for commuting and urban assault. Me no likey skinny tires.

EDIT: Correction, they are 2.5" Hookworms. I thought 2" sounded small. Every half inch counts!

Those are such cool looking frame! Some day I’ll get a Sklar bike which I feel like has a similar style to the sawyers

Curious to hear your thoughts coming from the Scout.

I still enjoy my Scout, but really want to try a mullet.

Love my scout. Racing an Enduro on it tomorrow lol.

I sold my tr11 and by selling my scout, my patrol will be a one bike solution, hopefully.

Here's all the parts I have so far, after finishing the ride wrap

I’m not hardcore like some of you guys but I have a carbon framed Trek road bike that I hated with drop bars, so I converted it to flat bars and still never ride it. When I do mostly pavement I lock out the compression front and rear on my Santa Cruz Tallboy, pump up my tires to 40 psi (I’m running 2.1 XC tires, Ardent/Ikon) and it makes a great real world road bike.

I ride my mtb on the road on occasion but that’s rally for training. The mountain bike maintenance is too expensive to be riding on the road a lot, for me personally haha. When I had a commuter that thing was cheap and didn’t get any love other than chain lube haha.

I have a couple paint matched vintage mopeds. I threw together a hitch rack for them but I usually just put them in the bed. The hitch rack holds 1 moped and 1 cooler.

One moped is a 1978 Concord XKE and one is a 1978 Puch Maxi. Both are 2-stroke but the Maxi is a two speed auto and the Concord is a single speed. Both do 50+ mph.

My version of a "road" ride. A few miles of gravel, then hit Bear Creek and Pinhoti 2 on the way back to the truck. Bonus of being hella slow is smelling the roses and finding a multi-tool on the climb up.

Anyone else part of the non cool kid club and rode roadies? In the northeast, and want a free.50 set of giant takeoff 700x28s with about 1k on them? Went down to 25s so I can drop the wheel without having an aneurysm.

I need some recommendations on wheelsets...I've got the stock Giant AM 29" wheels and they're absurdly heavy. This is mostly a trail bike with occasional trips to various downhill areas like Spider Mountain or Bentonville.

Thinking carbon will give me the most noticeable difference, but if I can get close to carbon weight with Aluminum, that may be the better choice.

On a budget, the I9 1-1 Enduro wheelset is tough to beat. They’re aluminum but they’re not terrible weight wise in my opinion.

Went for a random and ended up putting in a schlepper. Legs feeling about as roached than this bridge. Apparently a big ass tree fell on it?

Getting some miles on the Michelins. Still dry as shit around here. Waiting to get them on some wet dirt before final opinions. :blahblah:
