Pour over is nice but really only worth it if you like black coffee.

That looks like a nice machine! I’m going to have to add it to the list for when we have the counter space for one. Do you have to manually start/stop the shot pull?

Yes, but most shots you pull are only going to be 30 seconds or less.
These are what I'd call machines, something like Breville and such is more of an appliance.

If this machine has an issue you repair it, not replace it.
It's hand made in Italy. I found a good deal on an open box that had never even been take out of the box. Idk how that works, but I'll take it.

 

It's just fancy way of doing a regular coffee pot. The issue with coffee machines are most of them only wet the coffee in the center, with pour over you can make sure all the grounds get saturated giving you a better extraction. Some nicer coffee machines do better at dispersing the water than others. Obviously you taste palate determines if you'd likely even notice a difference. I've never messed with pour over so @113tac is going to be more insightful on how accurate I am.

Black coffee is typically the only way I drink coffee from the pot, but with espresso playing with the milk is fun.
I may even try incorporating some form of chocolate in the future, but that makes it more or less a snack, to where steamed milk is still just a healthy energy boosting morning drink.

 

Grind coffee beans, put the coffee in a filter, place filter on cup, or pot. Boil water, pour over grounds. Repeat pour until you’ve filled the cup or pot. Enjoy. This is what I do every morning, one cup of beans, one kettle of water, enough for 4-5 cups which is enough for my wife and me. We got a real espresso machine as a wedding gift and gave it away. That was 35 years ago, before espresso was a thing (in the US) and we just used a Mr Coffee or something like that. It never occurred to us to keep it or even try it. For bike context, at the time I had a Bridgestone MB1 with Shimano XT when that was top of the line and my wife had a Rockhopper with Deore, which was just one down from top. No suspension forks, not even V brakes (still cantilever).

 

Yeah that’s a better experience for sure. My parents have the breville barista express which is nice for knocking out a bunch without thinking much about it but longevity wise we will see how long it lasts. Its perfect for them just wanting easy lattes haha

 

Black is the way for sure haha. I do like a good latte with honey though, just a pleasantly smooth drink with the right amount of sweetness.

like @whitedlite and @dman100 said it’s just another way to make coffee. It’s how I make coffee which is now only on the weekends because I get hardcore heartburn and jitters from my pour over coffees haha.

If anyone wants to play around with fancier coffees, just do freshly ground coffee from a decent roaster. It’s game changing even if it’s in a regular coffee machine.

We don’t have lyme where I’m from but saw a young guy that traveled to the EC . Lyme rocked his heart- he got a pacemaker because he was in third degree heart block.

 

Dang I’ve never heard of it getting that bad. Definitely heard some not great stories. We’ve got tons of ticks over here.

 

I have that Breville, it's been going strong now for 5 years. 2-4 shots and milks a day. The included burr grinder, tools, and tray make it super easy to use first thing in the morning with brain fog. Makes a fantastic shot and easy frothing.
Consistently top 5 in most reviews... Dunno, maybe I haven't reached full snob, yet. But I don't see myself spending over $2k on a machine.

 

good to know its lasting that long! I will fully admit I'm a coffee snob haha and would have no problem spending money on a nice machine but the Breville's are pretty solid for the price, especially if you can get them on sale.

 

Which many people wouldn't even truly know until they've had some good pour over or other similar process with good fresh coffee. We just use a clever dripper at home (kind of like a paper filtered french press), but I started roasting all our own coffee about 7 years ago and now I'm spoiled.

 

I've never seen that clever dripper, super interesting, I may need to try it haha. My fancy coffee journey started with fresh coffee in a keurig reusable thing, then a french press and now mostly Chemex haha. French press is convenient but I don't like the mucky texture at the bottom of a cup. The clever seems like it would fix that for sure.

I'd like to dive deeper into roasting too. I've got one of those ceramic things which actually makes nice coffee, just a pain that I basically get one cup per roast. I've been looking at the Nucleus Link, seems like it would do a nice job! Nucleus LINK Coffee Roaster (roastmasters.com)

what kind of reusable keurig thing did you use? i couldn't get mine to work too well.

i used to do a french press every morning, but the convivence of the keurig won. i was adding milk and sugar to my french press coffee so maybe that was influencing my preference.

It has the same issue of muck/sludge but not as bad as french press. The grind was probably not ideal but keurigs aren't ideal in general for nice coffee haha

 

Getting away from Keurig coffee I started with metal screen reusable cups but hated cleaning them out. The same with the French press. I also tried the little paper filters for the reusable Keurig cups. In the end I settled on a pour over. I went with a metal dripper so I didn't have to worry about breaking it.

An important part of my routine is that I use and electric kettle to heat the water, so I don't have to worry about turning off the burner when I'm in my pre-coffee fog. The kettle has a setting that will hold a set temp for about an hour so if I go for a second I don't have to wait as long. The kettle also works for instant oatmeal when I need scarf something down because I'm late to meet my bros for an early morning ride.

Also, I use turbinado sugar with the coffee instead of white sugar.

How hard is rebuilding a rear shock? Any special tools needed?

 

I'm not a coffee expert, drink mine black with no sugar. Hate Starbucks and overpaying for a simple cup of coffee. But I do like the Aeropress Go I use when camping. I just use the Keurig at home since I am the only coffee drinker.

Rebuilding a rear shock is not hard, a strap wrench is useful, and picks for the o-rings. I've only done a Fox, but it was super easy.
