I want to move to Salida so bad, but costs are surprisingly high there as well.

Bend sounds divine, but I got kids in school in Boulder so I'll probably stay here. I bought a house here 15 years ago, so you'd think I'd be set, but daycare costs and general cost of living are so astronomical that unless you are a doctor, lawyer, or CEO, it's still a struggle, even with dual incomes.

EDIT: And yes, these are indeed first world problems.

If I didn't think I'd clobber myself on every single branch out here; I'd race the snot outta that beast!

 

There was a guy that did the Boeing Cycling Classin in DC on a penny farther. Finished a whole 8 mile circuit on the thing including a few punishing hills.

 

I reached full WTF when I was passed by a MTB unicycle at Santos a few years back... complete with disc brakes. (Proof that local trail knowledge often overrules speed and power)

Not the same guy... but gives you an idea of the level of weird to which even I cannot rise.

 

Well it's a fixie first off. You can go single speed, but never go full fixie.

 

I met a guy in Maryland who rides the 65 mile MOCO Epic every year on a mountain unicycle. #fuckingloco

 

Reading these bikepacking articles on the Tour Divide Race, you realize how insane these people are. But in the most "I get it" way ever.

Day 9: Chris found an abandoned USFS bathroom to seek shelter in that night, Josh bivied under a temporarily clearing sky, Steve stayed in the abandoned cabin by Rock Creek, and I never heard where Nate Ginzton stayed. It was another very uncomfortably cold morning, and I drifted back to sleep after waking before dawn to more snow. An hour passed and it was snowing hard, really starting to accumulate. It was time to get down nearby Gore Pass at 9,527 feet before things really went sideways. Evidently, Josh woke up covered in a couple inches of snow, and was also quite motivated to get moving.

 

There was some decent coverage over at the Radavist, as well. I really enjoyed reading all the stories during the race this year.

My newest hero is Alexandera Houchin -- she won the female category two years in a row... on a singlespeed! She's a f'n machine.
