Sounds a bit like my experience with the Fox CTD fork and shock I had on my Spearfish. I went all in and bought the linked remote cable to control the setting of both from the handlebar... more often than not, I would just forget and leave it in climb mode which made for some... interesting descents during Cohutta and Wilderness101 races.

My Stache takes up a lot of the slack on the mellower stuff. Tempted by the 130-140 range, but a good replacement for my Bronson would ideally eat up the whole enchilada and the chunkier stuff in the St. George + Fruita area. The Hightower I rode is Pisgah I still think about, so that's at the top of the list RN for me as a Bronson replacement.

At the end of the day, @abacall is right that I just need to run what I brung more and be happy.

But this is America. If we don't consume, destroy the earth, and buy unnecessary things then who are we?

@honda50r unrelated question: Do you really not carry your phone when you ride? I saw your comment on Pinkbike about it a while back (or it was A Honda50r username)

I get the disconnected element, but what if you need help?

Yeah I probably shouldn't have posted that - it was half hyperbole anyways. But it was directed towards the fact I don't use my phone while in the woods (for GPS or whatever). If I'm riding, Strava still records but my phone is on 'Do not disturb' whereas any hike I turn my phone completely off.

With my full-time job and side hustles I am constantly plugged-in and on the phone so the solitude of riding/hiking has become something that is essential for my mental health. So I do literally have my phone but it's in dummy mode so effectively I don't have my phone - if that makes any sense. I just really hate how things have gotten with people not being able to slow down and enjoy their surroundings.

A recent exception has been for my new company whereas I have to constantly take photos for the instagay account which can really kill the vibe. It sucks

Oh, I got you. I'm the same way. I have Strava and trailforks up, but the rest can wait till I get home. This is my time.

With that being, music can be a total game-changer while hiking. So I do like that option; offline Spotify downloads is my shit

Maybe invest in a solid camera with WiFi that would allow you to still take the photos and transfer them to the phone but not having to engage with the apps IRL. Pair it with a good carrying strap to protect the investment, bonus that both are business expenses...

I only use my phone for pictures while I use a Garmin watch to track all of my rides/hikes. On some of the shorter and more crowded trails in my area where I don't plan to take any pictures, and where I know I can flag down help if I need it, I just leave the phone in the truck.

It's nice to completely disconnect as often as possible.

After Christmas, I also plan to purchase an emergency beacon and dedicated camera to negate the phone altogether for longer trips. At that point, I'll just stow it at the bottom of my packs and hopefully forget about it for a while.

I've been contemplating one of those watches for a long time. Just can't really justify the price for recording capability

Well, here's the bonus... it also tells time.:D

In that regard, $250 is actually pretty cheap compared to most decent (adult) watches, but I can see how that wouldn't sound like a deal to people who don't otherwise wear a watch.

Suunto shows up at a lot of the outdoor events I frequent out here. I can try and get you a pro deal referral if you'd like. I got Suunto Spartan for like 40% off and it will standalone record and download gps/hr/stat data to strava, etc when it gets back in bluetooth range of my phone. Pretty nifty.

My phone is on silent 24-7, so I take it with me on rides. Its purely there for the rando pic or for emergencies. I have Strava, but don't use it as I'm not too concerned with record keeping. Its just pure fun and fitness for me.

My everyday (and only) watch is a now discontinued Garmin Forerunner 10 (??). Super basic GPS watch. Tells the time, tracks my distance traveled/speed/laps/etc., and nothing else. No text or call alerts. No linking to a facebutt instatwitter account. Its glorious.

Their Spartan Sport HR has been on my wishlist for awhile, waiting for the prices to drop a bit. It gets really solid reviews for multisport and standalone training recording.
