Yep, exactly. Every form of transportation of bikes has downsides.
Roof: wind, lower mpg, garages, hard to get up there
Pad: security, rubbing, loss of bed space, blocks cam
Hitch: weight, some rub on fork/frame, tailgate clearance, blocks cam, wiggly off road
Bed mount: access to bed, weight, wind
**Not all have the same issues, and I'm sure I'm missing something...

I'm currently using a pad, hitch, bed mount, Softopper, or combo of the three.

I have a tailgate pad and a 1Up rack. Both have their uses. The real problem is having the DCSB. Double cab means I’m always the shuttle guy. Even when it’s a 1500 mile round trip to Utah, though my friends are pretty good with gas and beer. It’s one reason my 2016 has 75K miles, even though I’m retired and don’t commute.

That's the exact reason I have an access cab long box. Only room for my lab in the jump seat area and camping equipment in the tonneau covered box.

I've changed up my transport methods a few times since that post but back then the forks were locked down w/ Rocky Mounts locking fork mounts and I had a steel braided cable wrapped through the frames of the bikes. Sometimes I'd wrap a couple cable locks around the bikes.

@abacall Im bailing on Fruita. Weather looks pretty grim for a trail system that just dried out.
