I don't know much about the components at that price point. The Specialized has hydraulic brakes vs mechanical on the Diamondback. Moving up to the Pitch Comp gets you a 1x drive-train at the same price as the Diamondback.

Pitch vs Hook, I'd go with the Hook because of the 1x drive-train
Pitch Comp vs Hook, I'd go with the Pitch Comp because of the brakes

but hydraulic brakes vs mechanical is a better upgrade than 1x8 over 2x8....in my opinion...

ignore the Comp. literally those two bikes haha.

It's a tough call between brakes and drive-train. Any budget for upgrades?

Idk how good those hydraulic brakes on the pitch are. They are shimano so should be decent.

the issue with the hook is that it is 1x8 with an 11-32 cassette....that’s not a whole lot of range in my opinion

well the price difference is 130$ in favor of the specialized, so there's at least that, but yes he's going to upgrade some stuff

right, and I think he can go to a 1x10 setup or so on the pitch for less than that 130$ price difference of the hook, and still have hydraulic brakes.

I think we convinced him for the specialized because he gets his LBS in on that one, and the cheaper price.

so found out something pretty sweet...we have an old golf course that is being converted to a multi use facillity, which includes a 4 mile singletrack loop for mountain biking. this is right on my way home from work so will be easy to knock out 8-12miles each day after work for good saddle time.

I knew all this, but here's where the "sweet" news comes in. Here's the picture they shared of the plans. So the single track is almost the same color as the 10k running course so I assumed it went right beside it the whole way...

    upload_2020-6-11_9-16-33.jpg

WRONG. found out this in light blue is actually the course!

I'm super excited for it to finish, it's like 4 miles from my house and on my way home from work.

Apparently some "mountain bike course designer" from Chattanooga is designing it, so they're claiming it'll be pretty sweet. It will be used for time trials/races during some seasons so I'm thinking it will actually have some features on it too.

Is it Barry Smith? Do some research and see if you can find out. If so, that's good news for you

If that means NICA races, prepare for the the sidewalkiest of dirt sidewalks. Have you ever seen a rock that's an inch high out of the dirt and 3 feet laterally from the start of a trail get orange painted? Maybe that's just the northern Utah chapter's MO, but geez.
