I’ve been riding flats for 6 years after 20+ years clipless. My problem was never unclipping, it was getting clipped back in after starting up on a techy uphill. This was with OG Shimano pedals and shoes. Has this gotten better with new tech, or is it technique?

Happy to show you, in PC area. Quite rogue, very steep, skidder-type. Hit me up if you want to check em out.

So glad to hear they’re taking care of you. Good news for sure.

I thought you meant the Shimano/AXS combo.

It should be noted there are more variables here. I've seen too many cases of people thinking it's the pedals when it's actually their technique. Clipless only masks the problem. Some of the best gravity riders around ride flat pedals by dropping their ankles and lowering their center of gravity. Modern flat pedals and shoes are incredibly effective and offer the same "clipped-in" feeling without the clipless commitment. Just my $0.02 though, I don't know what I'm talking about

I think I cracked another rear rim... this was with the vittoria airliners... i'm tempted to upgrade to carbon rims and just run higher pressure.

If you're perpetually blowing up rims you need an aluminum DH rim with lifetime warranty. A lot of manufacturers have something like that.

The only carbon that makes sense in your situation is the Santa Cruz Reserve carbon wheels also with lifetime warranty.

    in my opinion.

Didn't know manufacturers had aluminum ones with lifetime warranty... that was the reason i was thinking carbon with the warranty from santa cruz and we are one.

i think you're right, time to look for some beefy aluminum dh rims, at least a rear one.

Man, if you’re looking for carbon wheelset the quickest way to get them is order that new Arrival. It comes with free lifetime carbon wheelset on i9 hubs.

Would you recommend heavier rim or something like I’ve got and just run inserts?

In my experience a wide wheel with DH casing is the most effective way to prevent flats/cracked wheels. Also don't listen to me - I'll ride on a cracked rim for months lol

Well I just removed my broken spoke without replacing. So I’m more on the lines of “if it works”

I agree on this. I switched back to flats after years of clipless riding. There was certainly a transition period learning how to stay connected to the bike (but basically, just drop your heels) but I almost never slip a pedal now with the main exception being tech climbing where I occasionally still try to pull the bike up with me (clipless cheater move ha).

Some of the Enduro focused clipless pedals have a bit of platform with spikes integrated around the cleat. I find this super useful in the situation you're referring to because I don't need to be clipped in. Really comes in handy when starting in the middle of a techy section. It's kind of a best of both worlds thing.

    Just to name a few...

https://www.amazon.com/Time-Speciale-Pedals-Black-Pair/dp/B07PYYPG99 (I have been using these lately and I'm happy with them. They're a bit more stable than shimano equivalent, though a touch harder to clip in/out of)

Edit: and of course this article has now popped up on my news feed. https://www.singletracks.com/mtb-ge...in-9-clipless-pedals-scraped-up-and-reviewed/

I'm with y'all. I ride clipless on my road bike but never on my mountain bike. Also because I like to have fun in the air and don't want to be clipped in for that. Also when I tumble end over end, easier when the bike can go left and I can go right :D

My old Amazon setup was good to go a few hundred feet if I missed the clip (at least to cross a street or something) but the new ones have a curve to them and that's all jacked up now. Just a thing to get used to.

SPD there's a lot of combo setups, shoes and pedals that work with each other with or without the clips, but on my road bike I run SL so that's less conducive to riding without being clipped in.
