I posted in another thread and was informed of this one, so I wanted to post here to maybe get some more feedback (thanks to the couple guys from the last thread, btw.)

With the deals going on, I'm considering picking up a new Stumpjumper Evo Comp (carbon.) Anyone have one? I currently have a '16 SJ Comp AL 650B. I like it but the shock is kind of wallowy. Also it's a bit twitchy for me. So I think the Evo will calm that down and also give me a little better suspension action. The adjustability of the new Evo is insane. I just worry that it may be too much bike in the tight/tech stuff. And I'm not a great climber, in general. So I am unsure if the Evo will make it easier for me to climb, since it's plush or if I would wish for the nimble-feeling standard SJ Comp carbon. I really want the Evo. I would just hate to get it and it feel like a handful in some sections. I don't think that would be the case, especially on the 21+ model, but just figured I'd ask. The standard SJ Carbon Comp would be my other choice. I like that it would be lighter and snappier but I just don't think those qualities are what I'm after, as much as I'm after stability in rough and something to inspire confidence in rough etc.

I can speak to what I do. Part of it is just riding more, as you ride more your arms will get stronger. I also do strength training 1-2 times a week throughout the season with time off around races to help recover from lifting.

Some of the gym work I do:
-Squats (barbell front/back, single leg with Kettlebell/dumbell)
    -Deadlifts (barbell, KB/DB, single leg)
    -Lunges (bodyweight, barbell, KB/DB)
-Shoulder specific work (to help with shoulder stability due to injured shoulders)
-pushups, situps, planks, other random stuff for core

To make the kettlebell/dumbbell workouts hit the arms harder, I add fatgripz, they kill your forearms in a good way. I also have one of those finger boards for rockclimbing that I'm a huge fan of. I just do deadhangs on it and man my arms and core get an amazing workout. I need to try the portahang since I don't have anywhere to hang my big board up since I moved.

I find that the KB/DB stuff is enough to keep my arms feeling strong enough for riding.

If you want a program, check out everathlete, their stuff is pretty good and when you consider you have access to the entire library (which includes yoga/mobility work), decently price.
    everathlete

Like @backcountryj said though, pushups, burpees, and planks have the highest return, especially if you haven't done gym work in the past.

Me too but it hadn't shipped yet so I canceled and switched. I planned to add AXS anyway and alloy rims don't bother me. Oddly they changed the tires from Forekaster to DHR. Was that for cost or stock reasons? I doubt I will notice the difference.

With the updated geometry numbers you are going to notice an immediate improvement in climbing. You could always firm up the shock when climbing and release at the top, but I try not to do that as I always forget to open it back up. Actually found that having plush suspension on a technical climb helps keep the rear tire planted and allows me to stand up and push instead of hopping over and spinning out.

I bought one late last year, but I bought a frame only and built it up myself. I have the same rear shock as the comp, but everything else is different. I only got about 60 miles on it before switching to the fat bike for mud/winter riding, but I'm very happy with the bike so far. It seems to climb just fine and I don't find it to be too much of a 'big bike' in the technical stuff. The climb switch on the Evo (or the regular SJ for that matter) is very easily accessible so you can easily cycle it on for a long, sustained climb without much thought. I'm running the bike in the high rear setting and the neutral headset angle and it feels great on the trails. The beauty of the bike is that you can adjust it to your liking, and it only takes a few minutes so you can make adjustments relatively easily without any major disassembly.
I came from a Polygon Siskiu T7 650b, 150F, 140R. It was a great trail bike, no complaints with it at all. I was worried I was going to invest all this money into this carbon machine, then have the same feeling you were talking about, finding it to be too much bike and hard to handle in the woods. I have not found that to be the case at all, it's just as capable in the tech stuff and more capable once I point it downhill.

Ya that was sort of my thought process and what I was hoping, honestly.

That makes me feel much better, hearing that. Thank you very much for the response. Beautiful rig, btw.

I’m E/SE of Boston, just north of Gillette Stadium. We have some decent trails near by and I’m finding more all the time.

I’d push to moab- we are still soaked and Fruita is last to dry around here

past this crossing is all bentonite- saw the carnage from hikers being “helpful” posting pictures. Wettest winter I’ve ever seen. Should make for months of hero soon though.

I think that is the best looking option for a mount w/o taking bar space.
I just got the garmin edge 530, still learning all the features and how to pair w/ hr strap.

Didn't get to ride yesterday, but we did have a workday at our local trail. Revamped 2 bridges. This trail has gone "underwater" a few times in the last few years, when they open the Spillway connected to the Mississippi River

A couple of weeks in and my daughter is absolutely loving her new (used) Trek fuel EX7. It’s already worth the money.

Agree with above. Easy, only take a few minutes. Two years ago I challenged myself to 100 pushups a day for a year. Hard for the first two weeks, then wasn't bad at all. Split it up into 5 reps of 20 a day. When I started getting stronger, I upped to 25, then 30. By the end I was doing 150 a day. Then I started adding in burpees (fucking hate burpees, but man are they effective). Huge difference in my core and arm strength when riding DH. I didn't do them on days I rode though, both to combat fatigue and to allow for some "rest".
I think it actually changed my body long-term also.

Send a message when you are up - would definitely join in! F. Gilbert Hills is right next to the stadium and is quite the technical beat down, but always a fun ride.

Sick, I would be down. That's the park I was thinking about.

My parents live right next to adams farm so whenever I am there I ride from their door straight to the trail, I miss being able to do rides like that more often haha.

It’s a good spot. Not the most technical but it’s great for training. I’m not sure if they still do it but there used to be a big race series there during the summer. I think it was called the barn burner
