Buy one get one free (and no tax) Maxxis tires at a shop in town on vacation and they actually had the exact models I wanted. New rubber for the Scout. Went with 2.5 DHF and 2.4 Dissector both in MaxTerra.

How to tell you are the bike rider on the family vacation…

The 3 on the left are family members bikes that I offered to haul. My two are on the right isolated from scratches lol

Been busy the last two weeks getting to know this new pup I rescued. Getting her used to riding with the bike and she’s done fantastic on and off the leash. Just gotta get her fitness level up.

Awesome! Nothing better than a well behaved trail dog off leash. Sucks that so many spastic dogs give a bad rep for the well behaved ones.

Always wear a helmet folks. I took a crash today and I tucked and rolled but it was over some really big boulders so I definitely hit my head on the rocks. The helmet quite literally saved me.

Sawpit in Demo is one of my favorite legal trails in Santa Cruz. A little blown out right now though.

yeah. all is good. just a few scrapes. I definitely hit my head on something because the helmet is done for. I had a very slight headache right after the fall but havne't felt any concussion symptoms since. :D

So glad you’re ok man. Do what’s right for you, but general protocol is concussion check if helmet is broken. It’s worth a quick check up with your doc, could save you some future problems.
I’ve had my fair share of concussions, and they’re sneaky bastards. Sometimes a mild headache still means you need some time to recover.

I rode Wasatch Crest to Beartrap today. Holy moly is that a good descent! The top was a bit of a slide for life but then it was amazing alpine tech.

    Also, it is super smokey!!!

I asked not too long ago about a new helmet as I had the same thing. Went to the doctor and was diagnosed with a concussion - rung my bell pretty good on the trail, scary to think about how some people ride without a helmet.

Glad it seems like you are good! Hoping to get myself cleared to get back out later this week - the fitness drops too quickly when you are sitting on the couch waiting to feel better.

What style and brand of helmet is preferred now? I have an older (undamaged, but 2008) Bell Sport road bike style. It's adequate. Maybe.

I'd say anything with MIPS protection is good. Most "good" helmets will have it (or something like it). Next thing to look for is comfort/fit. Everyone's head is different, some helmets may feel funny on your particular head. If you are a fan of how Bell fits and you don't have a place to go test fit, I'd say stick with Bell. Bell is one that I have had good luck with. I also like the protection to come lower on the back of the head, but it is a trade-off for cooling. I have both a Bell and a Bontrager now, I prefer the straps on the Bontrager. I have the Bell with the removable chin guard.

I went with the Smith Session Helmet (has all the certifications, fit really well, and looks good). I cheaped out on my first helmet and ended up concussed - would rather spend some more money now on something that could protect a little better and save myself the week or so downtime and potential permanent damage.

Haven't tried Bear Trap, mostly because it cuts the ride so short. Maybe I can have the wife-shuttle pick me up and take me back to the top for a Pinecone to PCMR run...
On that note, the PCMR pass is a steal. $150 and 1600 free vertical feet of access to super fun stuff. So many hidden gems out there. Plus, you can do a Crest self-shuttle with a little bit of climbing which is awesome.
