Yea depends on the frame. find something close and you can change the stem, handlebars and seat to make it fit you. It is confusing I didn't ride for a few years because of an accident and when I started again I was lost. Spring is coming guys usually get new bikes or build new stuff over the winter and sell last years.

Really the old logic of height=frame size is almost impossible to use now, with reach/stack measurements and really slack seat tubes your best bet is go to a local shops demo days and ride a bunch of bikes. I run slightly longer top tubes with short stems. It's not ideal as it places your weight further back but it works well for me. Modern large bikes with short chainstays are likely going to ride like shit for you. Id try a medium, it's top tube (actual or eff) are probably what you might be used to if you havent ridden for years. If youre going HT 29r try and find a canfield nimble9, it's a riot to ride. it's somewhat slack, really poppy, and has adjustable chainstays so you can make it longer/shorter depending on what you like. As I said below i like longer top tubes, short chain stays. Bikes not as stable at speed but it makes up for it in snappiness.

My Evil has a super slack headtube and seat tube which can make for awkward climbing bike if someone isnt used to it, but i've ridden slack bikes since 09 now and it just works for my riding style and abilities.

I have a 29'er Trek HT. All XT, 2x10. It's a 2011. I used to ride all the time, had a FS bike, kept up with everything. Now I have totally lost touch with the new stuff the last few years, no idea who makes what anymore. I need to get back into it. Just riding occasionally now.

Zach i'm 6'0 and ride a 19 inch frame, just for reference, but yea as JJ said its all bike dependent. No 2 frames/setups are the same.

most builders have gotten away from sizing like 17/19/21 because seat tubes got so short and extended back that virtual lengths are the norm for them now and just use s/m/l/xl

At 6' with a normal inseam i'd say large. Im 6'2" with a 30/31" inseam and ride a large but slam seat forward with a short stem. It doesnt make sense on paper but it works well for me.

That's pretty good advice. A hard tail is relatively inexpensive and will allow you to grow into the sport. I firmly believe that is where you will learn most of your bike handling skills and if you choose not to get into the sport after a time, you will not have all that much invested into it.

Yep, I think I've heard that. The typical frame sizing is a thing of the past. It's also crazy how expensive bikes have gotten. I remember I got mine for $1700 I think. I don't think that can get you much of anything these days

Yea most new bikes are s/m/l/xl, and different frames in the same size won't fit the same. I rode so many bikes before I found one I liked, and then I change the stem, handlebars and grips, seat post and seat. In the past I built all my bikes so i know what works for me.

I have a 2007 Fuji Profession Caron road bike (bought used at a great price) and next on my list of things to buy is a mountain bike. Any beginners advice?

I feel there should be a bike for sale trade sticky

Do you have any more info on these?

Also, has anybody found a good solution for the bike racks contacting the tailgate? I had a KUAT from previous truck and absolutely love it. Just don't like not being able to use the tailgate.

Yes, that is the Thule Insta-gater. I just folded the tonneau up and let the back wheel rest on it. Be sure to use a bungee cord or something to tie the back wheel down because it will move around. The Insta-gater works great though!

Buy used, but if you do go new, definitely talk to the guys at your lbs. You can usually find a decent deal in Craigslist, but pinkbike.com would probably be your best source. I'm contemplating selling 1 or 2 of my older bikes, but don't think I would go the Craigslist route.

Actually pretty easy and I throw the wheel and axle in the cab, makes taking the bike a little less tempting. My bike is an old Specialized so I really doubt anyone would grab it but ya never know.
