It was a fun day until my saddle failed and almost shot up my ass. Kept looping around to this nice jump and came down pretty hard on the seat and then went ass to the rubber for a second. A Dropper probably could have prevented this had I dropped the post lower before the jump but Specialized cheaped out on not including one on the bike but then again I cheaped myself out by getting a camber. But this was a day ender. Only about 6 miles into the ride

    And i am only 155lbs.

That'll buff right out....? Hope your taint is ok. I'll also throw out to treat yoself to a dropper. I'd highly suggest a cable actuated one (I really like the fox transfer) or if you can find a good priced reverb, look at the wolftooth cable kit instead of the hydraulic lever

    @backcountryj
How do you like those XR4s?
Im having some 29x2.4s put on my Fuel(tubeless)...
But, after spending some actual saddle time on the Salsa today... Im starting to think F/S and 27.5+ is the way to go...
Just idle thoughts at the moment....

Mine are the 2.4s also and I like them for the type of terrain I ride most often; hardpack with rocks/roots.

I’d like to ride a 27.5+ just for comparison sake. I truly loved the Stache in the 29+ configuration. As much as I hear folks say 27.5 is so playful/nimble, it raises my curiosity. Honestly though, I really can’t see getting much more playful/nimble than most of the modern 29ers are. At least not for this pilot :notsure:

Just to follow-up I went to a local metal shop and had replica cross bars made up with a depth of 1" which has allow me to mount a Thule roof box and Yakima Frontloaders. I even cleaned, primed and painted them, first truck project accomplished and pretty happy with how they turned out.

Fabric Saddle is the comfiest I've ridden to date, but everyone's taint is different. Now there's a sentence I thought I would never find myself typing.

@E-Paz 732NJ I have a almost unused WTB(pretty sure) saddle you're welcome to have for the few bucks it would take to mail it to you.

Sadly, no beaver sightings... of any sort. But the Frankenstein SS gave me one hell of a workout on all the roots today!

    Two things to consider:
    1) You have a new Stache. Trek offers SS dropouts for the Stache. Testing out a SS build sounds like a no-brainer to me!
    2) When I was out there in your hood a few weeks ago, my riding buddy rode every single trail at PC, DV, and SLC on a hardtail singlespeed with old-school geometry (Spot Honeybadger), and he loved it. In fact, that's his only bike, so he just plows over/through everything.

Oh, woops, I forgot a third very important factor to consider:
    3) I'm the reigning King of SLC (in absentia) and command you to test a SS build with your beautiful new Stache... or an entirely new bike altogether. Your choice.

I never thought a seat would/could just completely fold like it did lol.

But yeah you do?? Whats it looks like? Will most likely be down to do that.

I'll get you a pic when I get home in a couple hours. Imagine a saddle that has 100 miles on it, so essentially a slightly dusty new in box. I get particular about certain things like saddles so I swapped it out, but it was pretty comfy for me on the 2 whole rides that I took it for since I bought my stache (it came with it)

    MESO!
I rode Pocahontas State Park in VA this past weekend on my Hayduke rigid and recall there being one spot where another rider was coming up behind me. I decided to play and give him a rabbit to chase so I ticked up the pace a notch and listened for his tires getting closer or dialing back. When we'd finished that loop and were catching up; he commented that I rode like a single speeder... I wasn't sure if I should take that as a compliment or some shade.

Still had a blast all weekend between those and the James River trails on Saturday. All tech on Sat and all flow on Sunday with some bitchin' pump track action for full grin!

Edit: Y'all would be proud of me... I intentionally installed my flat pedals to keep my inner racing imp in firm check and to remind myself to just have fun. Here's the thing about flat pedals on a MTB... they are so damn stable that they goad you into acting like a damn kid. Wheelies, rock hops that I'd never take while clipped in, riding the logs, skinnies, bridges, and man-built features where bailing if necessary means just hopping off rather than "oh shit I'm clipped in; fainting goat pose now!"

    Still not converting... :crapstorm:

Me? Not on my SS. It's an older XC racing build.

I might add one to my next SS build, though. Just got an email from Vassago yesterday announcing the release of their updated Verhauen. The steel is real, baby! I'm in the market for a 29x2.8 setup for bikepacking, so this just might be the winner:
    http://shop.vassagocycles.com/VerHauen_c_67.html

Check out their sample build... it's pure SSex:
