Any suggestions on trying to find a used road bike that I can use for commuting and riding around town?

Don't want to always use the mountain bike for my weekend rides on the roads...

Nothing yet. I'd imagine if you kept it on all year driving dusty roads or even worse through the winter with de-icer crap all over the roads it would eventually rub through your clear coat and affect the paint. But it's super plush microfiber on the under side and I don't leave it on 24/7. Some have put 3m clear protective tape on the rub points as well. Me... meh. It's a truck. Plus I loosen the straps and tuck it in the bed when I'm not using it, makes the back up camera easier to see out of also. Hands down though, easiest way to load bikes. IMG_5466.jpg

I gotta do the same today! Getting ready for Dirt Rag Dirt Fest in PA this weekend. My first time checking the event out and riding the trail system. I hear its a very well made trail network.

Yeah I dont have any scratches on my tailgate after leaving it on for a month straight. I made sure I cleaned the tailgate very good and strap the pad down tight so it cant shift or slide on the tailgate.

I was a little upset about the tailgate pad after coming from the 1UpUSA racks that dont touch the bikes at all. Now that I figured out how to protect the bikes and to hold them more securely I am very happy with it.

To protect and hold the bikes better, I cut a piece of soft plastic tubing and put it on the downtube where it contacts the tailgate pad. This protects the frame and helps it grip into the pad more. The straps are nice, but the bikes can still slide a little without the tubing. So if you care about your frame I would do the same thing. I also added clear film to the downtube of the my carbon bike.

One thing I have noticed though after a month of use, is the padding on the tailgate pad started to pack down. So I bought a $1 pool noodle, cut a slit down the middle and stuck that over the tailgate first then put the pad over top. That should add some extra protection to the bikes.

You can kind of see the tubing on the frames here:

I like drinking beer and watching these types of vids during the week - it gets me amped up for the weekend riding. Then I get out on my bike and can never ride this good, so I drink beer to feel better about it. It's and endless cycle.

I like to find ways to make an urban ride more fun. You know use the mountain bike, course out some hills, stairs, ledges things that make the boring ride more fun. Just another thought.

If anybody's interested, here's a quick gopro video of my friend and I on one of our local trails from 3 or 4 years ago. I'm on the white TR450 bike with the camera. Don't have that DH bike anymore though :( just have my santa cruz nomad C

Going to start doing that pretty soon as well! Been planning out some good lines at the local park that I am going to try and hit.

That's awesome! There is an area like that in Washington, its just referred to as exit 27. There are a few videos on youtube, a lot of bad riders and bad edits so i didn't snag one for you. But a very bad ass area, not quite as rad as woodlot there.
