You’ve got a direct mount chain ring so the one pictured won’t work. I’ve never seen a direct mount style guard, doesn’t mean they don’t exist though.

personally I don’t think you need it but that’s just me.

You don’t think a bash guard is needed? I’m on a lot of rocky terrain and afraid of smashing my chainring

I routinely ride rocky AF St George, Moab, and Grand Junction, CO and don't have a bashguard. You'll be fine.

Edit: My new Sentinel does, but my old Bronson + my Stache doesn't.

Can always get another one if you do decide you need one.

That's my thought too. I have bashed my chain pretty good a couple times though.

I don’t have one on my bikes and never have an issue. I don’t ride on the same terrain I used to but still rocky enough I get the occasional pedal strike. . I think those chain ring style bash guards were more for when people ran double/triple rings on their mountain bikes. I know my big gear used to be my bash guard when I rode a triple ring haha. Now I don’t have that problem ever since I switched to 1x.

plus the chain ring is a wear item anyways. I’d keep riding to see if you end up needing it, probably not likely though

So I have enjoyed reading a lot of the bike related stuff here regarding racks, some component information but it is really heavy MB oriented. Anyone involved in this kind of riding? It isn't me, that is my son, I am his bike tech. Any chance of running into any TW folks at a National?

Before my current bike, my last few were 3x that I went to 2x with bash guard mainly to get rid of the huge ring. Because I knew it was there I probably attempted things I might not now (I'm a better rider now). My new lower BB Transition Scout is a 1x and I have hit it a couple times. One required a bit of filing to smooth out rash on the chain. No damage to the chainring though.

I used to just leave the big ring on and let it take the damage...the only time I would use it is on steep paved down hills so it didn’t even matter haha.

I think the main difference now though is that the chain is going to take the damage. You must be riding some super sketchy stuff though haha

A bash guard on a 1x drivetrain is redundant. The chain itself is the bash guard. If you crush / break teeth bashing the 1x gear, you likely had a crash bad enough to break your actual teeth. As others have said, bash guards were from the 2x and 3x drivetrain era, and was a wear item. I have probably a half dozen just floating around.

Also I would be willing to bet your frame does not have the rear iscg hole to prevent a taco bash guard from being installed. Tons of bikes have iscg built in, but will actually void a warranty if used with a taco bash. Hence, front bolts only = chain guide only.

Once was on a steep techy rocky climb where I got the front tire up and over a rock but high centered in the middle. Second was actually a pretty mellow trail but has one big rock feature I slow rolled and clipped the peak of the rock mid straddle.

Those climbs will get you. I definitely think slower techs stuff is more likely to hit a ring, at least for me

I don't have firsthand experience but would love to race BMX. Knoxville was building a track until the budget was cut. Seems like it would be a fun sport
