You were on to something here, this video gives their take on why this was important. Basically after Dr. Strange saw the one way they can win he let the fight with Thanos go a certain way, making Thanos really fight for the Time Stone thus showing Stark he can draw blood, leaving Stark with the hope he can be beaten.
