I bet if you had those head gaskets replaced it would have gave you another 200k. Sorry to hear that though. Sounds like it served you well. What's the plan? Rebuild? Swap? Or newer tacoma?

Bought my truck new too and my heads gasket blew at 490,000.

Seems that alot here blow after 400,000

I put in a used 2004 motor that had 100,000 miles from a rolled truck that cost 1500.00 and called it a day.

    Now at 578,000

Not meaning to thread jack, but was your original motor actually bad? Or did you just replace because it was more cost effective then fixing the head gaskets on a motor with that many miles? What happened to your old one? Would have been cool to take apart to see what shape it was in after all those supercharged miles

    Engine was NOT bad.
It was the cost effective solution. The problem with a head gasket leak is it could be a cracked head too.

Engine burned NO oil even with the supercharger on it its whole life at 490,000.

Did take heads off and passenger side was cracked.

The newer 2004 motor runs soo much stronger and gets 25mpg typically

My 3.4 is at 319k I’ll be happy if she goes to 400k. I still get 20mpg and have no real issues with it and daily drive it everyday

I'd replace the head gasket and keep on moving up.
My 96 has 415,000 trouble-free miles, and I have no plans of getting rid of it no matter how badIMG_0604.jpg IMG_2844 (2).jpg a parts failure.

I’ve heard the earlier ones had defective head gaskets from the factory, but most of those were replaced pretty early on. Apparently the MLS ones after 1998 crack heads while the earlier ones tend to blow the head gasket. I suppose the MLS ones could also leak due to corrosion though.
