Aloha, can I ask about the timing of model year changes? New colors?

    Hi there,

New to the Tacoma world (and Toyotas as a whole) and about to pull the trigger on one. I'm on Maui, and inventory is nonexistent here in Hawaii as a whole. I can't buy a new one from the mainland, I tried. I'd jump on a clean used 2020 or 2021 and ship it over, but many of them are priced at or over new prices.

My local dealership has a couple coming in over the next 6-8 weeks, but none of them have ANY extra equipment on them (I want heated leather and led headlights). He is talking about ordering one, with a 4-5 month wait. He's also saying that if I order this month it'll likely be a 2021, but if I'm ordering next month it might end up being a 2022.

    Couple of questions:

Am I correct in assuming that they tend to offer the previous years TRD Pro color in the other lines? Meaning, do you guys and gals anticipate Lunar Rock will be available to order on a 2022? That's tempting for me, there are SO MANY Tacomas here that it would be nice to have something at least slightly unique.

Is Toyota consistent from year to year in when they announce the following year availability? If so, when? From my understanding Hawaii is a little different than the mainland, anyone have any thoughts on this for Hawaii specifically? Sounds like last year it was formally announced at the Chicago Auto show, but with Covid?!

Any use speculating how the options might change?

Any other thoughts are appreciated! It's probably not a big deal, but it would kind of bug me to wait 5 months for a 2021 only to have the 2022 come out right behind it. Especially if there are new colors I would have preferred.

Anyone want to sell me a low mile 20 or 21 4x4 TRD Sport (Cement, SW, WCP or VB) with leather and leds and a short bed? o_O

Thanks, and sorry for the length! Looking forward to being part of the community

    Lyle

I've had half a dozen dealers (in three states) tell me they can't sell to someone living in Hawaii. Frustrating. Spent hours looking for the right truck, only to then be turned down.

What you need to do is go online and look at servco's inventory everyday. Two or three weeks ago they had 120+ trucks in stock including ones with the packages you are looking for. Maybe order one, but keep checking daily since I'm prob sure the sales guys don't always know whats coming in.

I’ve noticed it does change frequently there, but not for the better thus far. Only 5 of those are 4wd, which seems crazy to me.

Thanks, I’ll keep a close eye on it.

Long time Hawaii resident. There are several options you can take. You can purchase on the mainland and ship it to Hawaii. Have done it many times, don't let a dealership tell you differently. Best places are Oregon, Cali, and Washington...easy shipping to Hawaii. The further you get from the west coast the more complicated the logistics become. You can also order one from local dealer, but you will wait. I've been waiting 7+ months for my Voodoo Blue OR. In Hawaii, you get two options (allocations)on new Tacos; "A" or "B." "A" is minimally loaded, and "B" and loaded...no in between. You can also purchase off FB Marketplace (from Oahu) and ship it to Maui via Matson and Young Brothers.

Hawaii as whole has stopped the purchasing of NEW vehicles from the mainland as years past to make it finacially costly to do that. Law makers have closed that loop hole along time ago to benifit car dealerships here in Hawaii. If you ship a new vehicle here you pay double the taxes plus the shipping cost. If you buy it from the mainland you will have to pay that states taxes and also Hawaii state tax. Back in the 70's I ordered a new mustang and had it shipped here but times have changed. Buy your truck here on Oahu and ship it to Maui would be the best option if you can't find what you want. Heated seats might not be as easy to find in stock in Hawaii.$.02

You're probably correct about lunar rock trickling down to the standard trim levels for the '22 model year. It seems like they usually let the special Pro color trickle down to the rest of the trims after the first year.
Another trend I've noticed is that the normal colors (black, white, silver, red) tend to hang around forever, but Toyota only keeps the unique colors (inferno, cav blue, quicksand, etc) for 2-3 years before getting rid of them. I was kind of nervous that they might get rid of Voodoo Blue for '22 or '23, so that was one of the reasons I went ahead and grabbed a '21.

I just bought a tacoma last july and shipped it to the big island. You can buy but you can not finance with toyota north america, you have to find your own finance. As far as add ons, you can get someone to install whatever you want if you bought on the island. If you are on the big island I can help with installing 95% of any addons you want. Send me a PM.

    this and that...
on the big isle, we had a inventory (everything pretty much) drought for a long while. recently though, it looks like the inventory has been building back up. right now looks like theres four tacos on the lot; all off roads though. since youre rather specific, you probably gonna have to order to your liking. its not too bad. for my daily i had to put in an order for it since i was pretty specific about it. filled out the paper work, put down the deposit and was told it was gonna take three months to show up. six weeks later badboy strolled off the barge ready to roll. i can only assume itll be similar to the taco since both vehicles are number movers for toyota. anyhow, good luck.
