I had the same issue with mine. I could get carplay to work maybe 1 out of 30 attempts. I removed the right angle USB cable that came with the radio and ran my adapter for the stock USB port direct to the radio and it has been solid. It detects my phone every single time now.

What do you mean? It will not use the stock mic, and if your factory camera shows in the mirror, it won’t use that either. Hooking up the factory camera from the mirror requires a bit of extra wiring.
If your camera shows on the factory radio, the parts Crutchfield sends you may (but probably won’t) keep it working and you’ll need some additional parts for that

to clarify - will it convert to the head unit automatically, without me having to unplug anything from the stock setup? i’m assuming not.

Most of the chargers wont. They will have red and black wires for power, but they don’t connect to the radio. Look for the ones that show the male end of the USB.

The CRUX harness that Crutchfield sells allows the backup camera, USB port, and steering wheels controls to all work on the aftermarket radio. I had it before I sold my radio and everything worked just like factory.

hooked mine up but no steering wheel controls or backup camera working. i have three extra connectors not being used from the module, which is normal for my truck according to the instructions and twostock plugs not being used (below - one is for the hazard cluster). the light on the module is red. the switch is set correctly for alpine. i have also tried resetting all of the controls. am i missing something? am i supposed to buy the cam-ty11 separately?

edit: i’m getting a new interface as mine seems to be defective. that’s why no steering wheel controls. no backup camera in the head unit because my truck doesn’t have the proper wire to connect to the head unit.

I installed mine with the idatalink maestro. Overkill, but I might upgrade down the road and figured I’d be ready that way. Anyway, every plug from the factory was used on mine. The 20 pin white connector runs the steering controls.

I used a usb adaptor from Amazon that plugged right into the blank locations by the cig lighter.

Does it sound better than stock? Do you have aftermarket speakers?

Stock non-jbl speakers. I didn’t get the power pack amp. Definitely better sound than stock. It’s not an audiophile grade, but a clear improvement. I still need to dial in the EQ a bit, but it’s great for what I need.

I got the kicker ds series front back and the subaru kicker drop in tweeters in the front dash. Sounds great already with stock headunit and killer with an aftermarket Pioneer HU but had issues with back up camera not working....looking for another HU now..... Eyeballing this one...

I’ve run pioneer HU’s in the past and this definitely isn’t in that league for SQ. The one I ran had the built in 50x4 mosfet amp.

I wanted to grab the pioneer MVH-1400NEX, but it was out of stock with no idea when it would be back. It’s back in now...go figure. That gains you idatalink support and it’s only $45 more. Not sure how the sound would be on that, it’s only 14watt RMS vs the 16 of the alpine, so probably a wash there.

Going to be installing this unit into my GFs Jeep. How's the micro bypass connected?

it comes with pretty clear instructions. You just hook up the relevant wires. Only connect to the radio side, you don’t connect to any actual signal wires. I had one wire not connected for my application.

Got the thing installed in her jeep in about 30 mins. I got it all wired up and put in the micro bypass too, everything was really straight forward. Her jeep had a crappy radio with no bluetooth, or anything special. But the thing came with a factory sound upgrade. An amp subwoofers in the back all alpine. So I figured I should just stick with alpine for a head unit. It was the easiest install ever. If anyone wants a basic radio for CarPlay. I would 100 percent get this! The only downfall I have with it is it doesn't get HD radio. But if you're looking for something for solely CarPlay and an increase in sound this is the way to go.

How did you do the micro bypass?....I was going to order from crutchfield but I see people complain about this parking brake bypass issue.

The instructions will tell you what wires to use, but on the alpine side of the harness, you hook the wire that is supposed to be on the parking brake to the parking brake wire of the bypass. You hook power to power and ground to ground. Good to go. There is a brake wire on the bypass that you will just tape up and not use for this radio. Do not connect to any vehicle side wires (other than power and ground), only radio side.
