Hey all...woke up to a dead batt on my 19 w/15k miles. Assumed kids left a light on. Jumped it and ran it for awhile. Seemed ok. Dead again hours later. Just trying to get a consensus on the reliability of stock batts. I haven't done any electrical mods or changed anything recently, so ruled that out. Before I yank it out and take it to be load tested I thought I'd ask if there were any common shorts/issues to check first. It's a garaged vehicle in central CA... battery hasn't been abused whatsoever. Thanks all!

Are you inside of 24 months of ownership? If so, I believe your dealer will replace it free.

If able see if you can measure the parasitic draw/drain on the battery. Only tool required is an ammeter and the youtube. anything over 30 mA is considered questionable. If its dying in a few hours you are probably looking at a few amp draw. I would see if you could measure that before you take it to get load tested

I had to replace my battery last year, it lasted about 2 years. I opted to get a warranty replacement, but in 2 years when the new battery shits the bed I will buy a nice one.

Sitting on the lot that long I'd put big money on the salesmen jumped that truck at least 5 times and then "let it run". Very hard on the Battery and also the Alternator.

Your jumping it and "letting it run" = the same thing.

If you drove it for 8 hours at 2500RPM with all accessories off it might be fully charged and ready to be tested.

The battery needs to be properly charged and tested OR based on it's age and medical history, buy it flowers and get a new one.

Batteries don't like to be completely discharged and Alternators don't like to charge them. The Alt's job is to "maintain" the charge in the battery not put it back.

I know it's all bad news but after a long career as a tech I can't remember ever getting to fix what was right on a car....

Take it to a Toyota dealership OP. Mine died after only a year. My service writer told me this is fairly common with Toyota batteries and it was replaced under warranty with no questions asked. So far so good on the replacement

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Yea the stock batteries suck. Made by interstate. The replacements tend to last a bit longer. But still made by interstate. The battery is covered under 3/36, so just get it replaced.
The good stock batteries are the Panasonic’s in Japanese built Toyota’s. I’ve seen 10 year old ones that still test good

I’ve gone through roughly one a year. My truck has left me stranded each time. All oem batteries. I’m on my third in 3 years. This one has lasted the longest at about a year and a half. I’m in New England and the cold murders them. I have nothing attached to it besides the truck. No accessories lights etc. They’re an 84 month battery, least is what the sticker says. Or maybe it’s 8.4 months

No issues with my stock battery. Now going on three years. I do notice that the resting voltage will go to 12.10v but the truck does not have any issues starting after a few days of sitting. The only parasitic draw that I am aware of is the anti-theft feature of the truck.

I have (very rarely) put a 2amp trickle charge on it a couple of times. That will bring the battery up to 12.55v overnight. So that is less than I would like for a resting charge of the battery, and it will not hold it of course over a period of inactivity.

I keep all of my bikes on Yuasa trickle chargers/battery maintainers. I'll probably buy another Yuasa charger for the truck.

Nah I don't think there is. Only a light if the alternator shits the bed.

I would check alternator for proper voltage output to confirm it’s charging battery .if you are under warranty have it replaced at dealer .say that the battery was drained with lights on . Proper way of charging it is to put it on a charger overnight then see if it will hold the charge .

Mine started "leaking" acid at 1 year and only 6,000 miles. I hate corrosion, so I decided to replace it myself with an AGM battery instead.
