I wondered about this. My son drives a 2015 Scion and it still working on the original battery, Panasonic.

There are multiple variables that will influence how long your battery will last, including who made it.. Definitely hard to predict when they will give up the ghost. Given that, I don't screw around when it comes to replacing batteries. If I get a solid 4 years out of a battery, I consider it has done it's job and I go buy a new one. It's not like we are talking about a lot of money here.

My '19 SR will be 3 years old tomorrow, 10/19/21. Same battery that came in it. No issues.

Laugh if you want but I have one of these stuck in plug-in to the right of my gear shift. Had it in my 2016 SR5 also. You can leave it in and it shuts off when the ignition is turned off. Cheap peace of mind to get a advanced warning before the battery takes a shit.

My 2017 has the same battery from factory as far as I can tell. It may have a bit to do with driving style as well. I do long highway miles for my commute. I suspect that plays a big factor.

Mileage has absolutely nothing to do with battery longevity.

I’ve been fortunate so far. Bought my 2017 new in December of that year. Still has original battery.

I had to replace the battery in my 19' last month. Napa had a sale going on so I picked up one of their Legend batteries. If you have a tuner near you I'd grab a Northstar x2.

Swapped mine out to a Duracell AGM from Batteries Plus.

Just hit 2 years of ownership, and my factory battery was leaking pretty good. Didn't want to mess with a warranty claim, got a nice TRD tie down from a guy on the forums here, and nice billet terminals. Looks much better under the hood.

My 2016 still has original battery and running strong. I even run a winch off it occasionally. I am surprised that it's lasted this long though.

Here's a good laugh for you guys...called my dealership this AM to schedule service/batt warranty. Was told "in order for a battery to be replaced under warranty the truck has to be towed in" :facepalm:What exactly is wrong with the world today? Have we really reached this level of idiocracy? I'll do a drive by and chat with a service manager...if I can't get a 30 minute fix I'll just go buy a real battery. I hope I never have any REAL warranty issues...

To be fair there are many electronics drawing power on these trucks and you drive less than 8000 a year it doesn't get fully charged. I went out to my garage tonight and heard what sounded like my fuel pump running, it was shut down hrs ago.
Take it to a Walmart with a TLE have them test the battery they will give you a read out on a battery tester that is the same as the dealership uses.

They slapped one of Toyota's finest TrueStart batts in it and sent me on my merry way. I'm sure I'll be back in 18 months but oh well.. warranty is warranty

I have an 18 battery that just turned 3, so you must have had a lemon. Good luck on the next one. Oh yeah, I have now 31,000 miles on the Taco.

So are people doing preemptive replacements at the 3 year mark to avoid being stranded?

To some degree, that is what I always do. I usually preemptively buy a new battery around the 4 year mark in all my vehicles. Some batteries seemingly last forever, but many die a premature death due to harsher conditions. I guess it depends on how lucky you feel!

Something else to consider in this weird time we live in; supply chain issues might also start to impact the supply of new batteries out there for sale. I have not heard specifically that this is happening with car batteries, but a lot of other commodities are in short supply these days so you never know. If you are close to needing a new one it might be smart to go ahead and get it done now.

Drive that thing more, letting it sit isn't good on the battery, especially if it's used for short trips.
Mine gets less than 1k miles a month, but 40-100 mile (one way) use, if I don't use over the weekend, I'll drive it for 30 minutes or so.
