Could remember when we were kids having sling shot wars, until one of the kids unloaded on us with his daisy BB gun. It stung like a sum bitch...then we beat the chit out of him.

    True story:

As children in the 70’s roaming the hood up to mischief we’d always be picking fights with one another. This was before video games etc, when you had to manufacture your own good times. We sometimes had to sentence one of our gang for “punishment” for something they did that was not cool. We had two methods:

1 - “firing squad”: the victim has to stand and take a single shot from a Daisy BB gun in his back. Only a single layer of clothing was permitted. This usually resulted in a nice red welt, but never blood.

2- “Electric chair”: we would string one of those old webbing patio chairs with stinging nettles (they grew in abundance in our alleyways). The victim would be forced to sit in the stinging nettle chair with only shorts-and-tshirt. This usually resulted in the victim going home to mommy.

I swear we all turned out just fine!

It was different times. We never shot at kids. As feral and unruly as we all were as kids, there was also some code of honor there. You didn’t hit girls, shoot at kids, are talk shit about each other’s parents etc.

Not to derail this thread, but looking back on those days, I sometimes think it’s because our parents let us run wild in the neighbourhood, and trusted us not to screw up too badly, that we had to take some personal responsibility to “do the right thing” at the time. You didn’t want to lose the privilege of running free.

I feel these days kids expect to be told what to do, because they have been nurtured, protected, and directed their whole lives. When they are not told what not to do, they put the blame for their mistakes on those in control of their lives. “Mom and Dad didn’t tell me not to shoot the kids so how would I know?”

I dunno. I wouldn’t trade growing up in the 70’s and 80’s for growing up now.

...not at children, but at brand-new police cars rolling past on open train cars when I was a student at Buffalo.

There was no record of my childhood pranks, hijinks, and indescretions, because if there were, Id never be able to look the one-hour-photo clerk in the eye.

And exactly that's the way we liked it.
