could be on its way out. Hard to say without being there. Compare it to the passenger side and check if it’s significantly more. Also note if you were getting any kind of growling when driving in 2wd that goes away in 4wd, that’s a give away that the needle bearing in the diff is on its way out.

I bought a timken outer dust seal for my GX. Same CV setup as a 4th gen 4Runner. Maybe there is a comparable for a Taco.

Hm. My brothers 4runner uses the same CV's as I do. Do you recall the part #?

I retract what I initially posted. I was thinking you meant the dust seal that gets pressed into the inside of the spindle, between the bearing and CV. But you mean the seal that always comes pressed on to the outer CV. The others are right I see no aftermarket part for that part number you listed.

How important is this seal? I know it must be important, since it's there, but would it be ok to put it back together for a week until I can get the seal?

For a week it wouldn't be the end of the world, just don't go driving in a lake between now and then. It's essentially what seals the wheel bearing off from seeing any contamination from the inner part of the spindle, so without that "dust shield", the inner seal that's pressed into the spindle has nothing to seal against.

I had to replace this seal when I bought a used axle from LKQ, and that was the only aftermarket version I could find, and that I could get quickly.
