Aluminum Sliders

Why hasn't anyone made this yet? Seems like a great idea for us mild off-roaders that mainly want door ding protection and bro status, but don't want big steel weight, nor need the big steel protection.

Attempted by Mobtown years ago. Consensus was that it wasn’t worth it for cost vs. strength. Even then there were a lot of other issues that came up during prototyping.

Here you go! People report that they are strong enough to take the occasional hit offroad but if you are doing 99% of your driving on road then the weight reduction is a worthwhile compromise.

typical DOM or HREW sliders are ~150lbs for the set. SDHQ makes a chrome moly set that are right at 100lbs total with the hardware. and arguably stronger, but definitely not weaker. save 50lbs but you gotta pay to play. they're expensive.

Also aluminum doesn’t slide over things like steel does. It tends to gouge and actually grip onto surfaces.

All my armor is aluminum (bumper and skids) EXCEPT my rock sliders. Those are steel and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

 

Just get custom made thin wall steel tube sliders if you don't want the weight. It will be just as useless as aluminum but won't cost an arm and a leg.

 

I’m also wondering about same question. I spend most of my time driving on pavement, but do quite a bit of camping so I go through some rough trails at times. The side of my truck gets peppered with rocks too, even with mudflaps.

The best thing that I like about aluminium, is it doesn’t rust. Well and the weight savings of course.

I have a steel bed rack, RTT and I can already feel the weight. Still need to add front aluminum slimline bumper, transfer case skid, gas tank skid, winch, sliders and rear steel bumper.

Yes, that’s what I’ve been told by my 4x4 shop. He said if you want sliders as a step and door dings, get aluminum. For anything else, gotta have steel.

So what are the weight savings with aluminum sliders? 30-40 pounds?

 

If you wheel your truck, sliders are no guarantee.... aluminum or steel

Aluminum being soft won’t skid very well, it’s too sticky.

In all seriousness...I'd avoid aluminum sliders, as mentioned, they would grab and gouge rather than slide.

 

Edit... no drag strip... just having fun, wheeling and fishing when I can.
