LA's Totally Awesome Degreaser at the Family Dollar. 32 oz Spray Bottle for $1. Best degreaser I have used and I have tried EVERYTHING! In a black bottle for automotive. You will thank me.

Perfect. Def a lot more confidence now. It’s all in prep to clean all the oil and sludge before I put dye in my oil to see where this seepage is coming from. I pray pray for lower oil pan gasket. I picked up some gunk original and gel. Had some advance speed perk rewards after all...

Oven cleaner as a degreaser for the engine is an acceptable product, BUT only in certain circumstances. I have used it many times over the years.
Like many others have said, there are many other choices that will work just as effectively. I personally prefer simple green, or AGP50, properly diluted (1:1 or in that area). I have professionally detailed for many years and have used many products with much the same results with most of them.
I would recommend using scrapers, and brushes etc to remove the worst parts of the residue. Do this before the water and soap application. Getting the layers out of the way will greatly help the soap do its job.
Concerning the electrical components and various seals, provided you don't go full apeshit with a pressure washer you'll be fine. Typical garden hose pressure and some common sense will serve you well.

much appreciated! It’s so long over due. I picked up some detail metal brushes to help get a head start on the sludge.

Excellent, just understand that if you just shove a brush into the sludge you will instantly goop the brush up. Look for paint scrapers, plastic wedges, trim pry tools, old screwdrivers etc to remove the bulk. Also lay cardboard down to catch all the crap so it doesn't get all over your driveway or shop floor.

don't be surprised if it's actually coming from where the power steering pump bolts into the timing chain cover. It's known leak spot, mines been doing it for many years, never enough to leave a spot on the ground but it seeps down to cover the lower part of the front timing cover/engine/bottom of the engine. When I have to replace my water pump again I plan on addressing it
    good luck

I never thought of that. Yeah its never been enough to drop to the ground or make a spot, but enough to send my anxiety through the roof every oil change. Its been a few years of this back and forth.. :/
